Position Overview


The Communications Specialist is a generalist supporting the Pacific Salmon Foundation's goals to elevate awareness of Pacific salmon, the organization, and help grow our base of supporters.

The role focuses on content creation, media relations, corporate communications, and Government relations.

Reporting to the Manager, Digital Marketing & Development, the Communications Specialist works closely with leadership team and program leads to develop content and stories that support thought leadership and knowledge translation, and reporting out on project advancements and findings to help influence positive change for Pacific salmon and their habitats.

This role supports government relations, including outreach to arrange meetings and engagement, key messaging, and corporate communications across multiple levels of Government and stakeholders.


Roles and Responsibilities

The Communications Specialist's key responsibilities include:

  • Develop engaging content for PSF channels that support awareness for the organization's programs and brand;
  • Develop communications plans, key messages, succinct stories and social media posts to inform and engage PSF's audiences and stakeholders;
  • Support program communication: identify, research including interviewing internal experts, external partners, develop, and write stories for media relations and PSF's digital channels;
  • Coordinate and write content for the Foundation's publications, such as: Salmon Steward magazine, annual report, etc.;
  • Review and edit contributed content to ensure information is accurate and consistent with style guides and brand voice;
  • Collaborate with marketing and communications team to plan and develop content that supports brand growth, donor engagement and knowledge translation;
  • Develop materials to support fundraising activity, including fundraising letters, stewardship reports, etc.;
  • Develop communications for Crown Government officials, coordinate meetings and plan engagement activity;
  • Prepare event briefings, speaking notes, and plans to support media and government events;
  • Develop video and marketing assets to support digital content strategy, including: story board, script writing, production;
  • Liaise with external suppliers such as printers and videographers to support projects;
  • Collaborate with senior leadership on proactive, reactive and crisis media relations;
  • Develop communications and collateral to support events and community activations;
  • Develop and track metrics for board reports;
  • Other duties as required.

Reporting and Supervision


The Communications Specialist reports to the Manager, Digital Marketing & Development with support to Leadership and an assigned program portfolio.


Qualifications

  • Skilled writer across platforms for target audience segments, content curation and planning;
  • 3 to 5 years of experience with media relations: story identification, development, pitching, preparing internal key messaging briefs and arranging interviews;
  • Degree or diploma in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Marketing or a related field;
  • Experience content planning to support a strategic organization priorities;
  • Experience with science communication, preferably within the environmental context;
  • Experience liaising with Crown Government, preparing written communication to Government officials and coordinating meetings and engagements;
  • Knowledge translation with superb oral and written communications, interpersonal, and time management skills;
  • The ability to work effectively under pressure and to meet deadlines;
  • The ability to work independently and within a team environment and to demonstrate a high degree of initiative;
  • Experience with social media platforms and website content management on a WordPress platform;
  • Experience with static and video visual creation, e.g., with Canva or other design platforms;
  • Comfortable working with diverse stakeholder groups on contentious resource management issues;
  • The ability to exercise tact, discretion, diplomacy and maintain confidentiality.
