Position Summary
The position is responsible for supporting SIER initiatives including, but not limited to:

  • Conducting comprehensive research/analysis on topics related to strategic initiatives taken on or proposed by SIER (such as enhancing industry engagement with the advanced manufacturing sector, development of a clean technology facility as well as the Downsview Aerospace Hub, etc.). The incumbent prepares/presents a variety of reports and materials as well as summaries of findings with recommendations based on research.
  • Conducting comprehensive research using a variety of tools (such as literature searches (internet/library search), data collection, and data analysis), which may require field site visits. The incumbent will also be required to develop and implement departmental research processes and procedures.
  • Preparing research reports to support business case development for new initiatives, for example conducting sectorbased research to inform the feasibility of a proposed initiative as well as to inform the potential impact and alignment with College priorities, industry trends, and government policy.
  • Providing support to all of SIERs pillars of activity by researching, analyzing, interpreting and presenting data to help enhance effectiveness of these pillars. The incumbent will assist the Communications and External Relations Officer by providing data analysis results to be included in SIER report.

Responsibilities

  • Research and investigate changing government policies and strategic directions to provide recommendations for SIER and Collegewide initiatives to ensure alignment with government priorities
  • Conduct primary and secondary research in areas such as industry best practices and current legislation to help identify and prioritize department initiatives
  • Conduct comparative research on strategic initiatives to identify best practices and assess competitive initiatives
  • Develop conclusions and provide actionable recommendations supported by analysis, and presented in a visually compelling, clear, objective framework for business decisions
  • Conduct statistical analyses to identify alignment between government policy/programs and project outcomes, impact, and effectiveness of proposed strategic initiatives
  • Support the Manager in tracking and enhancing effectiveness of SIER's pillars through statistical analysis
  • Liaise with staff at all levels across the organization to access common data to support the development of new initiatives/opportunities
  • Track usage and produce productivity reports related to the College's industry outreach service called Solv.
  • Develop and conduct surveys for quantitative and qualitative research to assess and analyze support for new initiatives
  • Provide support for SIER in developing presentations, etc.
  • Deliver presentations at internal meetings and workshops
  • Investigate best practices to enhance departmental processes and procedures
  • Promotion of department activities on social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.)

Qualifications/Experience

  • Four (4) year University degree in the area of public administration, public and/or regulatory policy, sociology, political science, or communications or a related field
  • Completion of an undergraduate thesis or major research paper including the completion of an ethical review process (Asset)
  • Minimum of three (3) years progressive experience in research including: designing and implementing qualitative and quantitative methodologies, data collection, review of processes and procedures, data analysis and professional writing
  • Knowledge and experience in qualitative data analysis, including narrative analysis to sort and organize large data sets and thematic coding to organize themes and concepts for analytical interpretation
