Summary
Supervising various teams of manual labourers in picking and packaging various flower or fruit crops. This person must be able to work well with colleagues as both a partner and a leader.


Responsibilities (include but not limited to):

  • Supervise, co-ordinate and schedule activities of workers who packs and inspect our production
  • Establish methods to meet work schedules and coordinate work activities with other departments
  • Resolve work problems and recommend measures to improve productivity and product quality
  • Requisition materials and supplies
  • Train workers in job duties, safety procedures and company policies
  • Recommend personnel actions such as hiring and promotions
  • Prepare production and other reports
  • May set up machines, packing lines and equipment.
  • Directs team in prescribed processes for selecting correct quality crops for picking and packing and ensures tasks are done correctly and efficiently.
  • Directs staff in packing of products for shipment following established procedures efficiently
  • Verifies product shipped matches customer order and specifications
  • Hands on supervisory position which requires both directing and doing.
  • Responsible for directing maintenance for all equipment in packing area.
  • Maintains required records for proper internal protocol
  • Ensures proper housekeeping, cleanliness and safety rules are understood and followed
  • Manages employees respectfully and efficiently and regularly evaluates their performance
  • Motivates, directs, and develops team members
  • Ensures all staff understands and adheres to policies and takes appropriate action for any violations of standards.
  • Continually looks for ways to improve processes and make recommendations for efficiencies and improvements.
  • On call as needed and open to overtime as required

Education:


  • Post secondary degree/diploma in Operations and/or Horticulture or an equivalent combination of education and/or work experience relevant to the role.

Qualities, Skills and Experience:


  • Experience in greenhouse flower production
  • Strong leadership skills and an approachable personality that earns the respect of peers and colleagues
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong math skills to make quick calculations (e.g. Time/resources needed)
  • Ability to drive tow motors (with training), and pullers as needed
  • Proven critical thinking and problemsolving skills
  • Organizational, time management and problemsolving skills with the ability to work under pressure with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to receive, process and report detailed information efficiently and accurately
  • Flexibility and initiative to undertake various duties and roles.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English a strong asset

Working Conditions:


  • Standing/walking/driving/reaching/bending
  • Repetitive motions (picking/packing)
  • Pushing/pulling carts
  • Lifting/carrying varying weights up to 20 kg
  • Occasionally working from heights
  • Average hours/week
  • Periodic overtime required
  • Periods of high heat and humidity or cold
