Description

The role of the Environmental Public Health Officer is to deliver the Environmental Health Program to SERDC First Nations and investigate, evaluate, and deal with health-related complaints related to environmental factors.

This involves the protection against environmental factors that may adversely impact human health or the ecological balances essential to long-term human health and environmental quality, whether in the natural or human-made environment.

These factors include but are not limited to air, food and water contaminants, radiation, toxic chemicals, wastes, disease vectors, safety hazards and other habitat alterations.

Other activities include providing the continuation of core mandatory programs, consisting of but not limited to air quality evaluations, water monitoring, sewage disposal, food service, institutional inspections and housing inspections.


Duties and responsibilities:


  • Conduct inspections of various premises and facilities to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Inspect food establishments to assess compliance with hygiene standards, food handling practices, storage conditions, and cleanliness.
  • Monitor and assess the quality of water supplies and air in the respective communities.
  • Investigate outbreaks of communicable diseases, such as foodborne illnesses or outbreaks in the communities
  • Assess and manage environmental hazards that could pose a risk to public health.
  • Provide public education and promotion of health and safety practices to help people understand regulations and the need for proper health protection
  • In times of environmental emergencies coordinate responses, provide expertise, and ensure the safety and wellbeing of the affected population.
  • Any other duties assigned

Qualifications and skills:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health or equivalent education
  • Certification issued by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI) is an asset
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience required


  • Strong leadership skills

  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization, and (internal and external), regulatory agencies.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental laws, regulations and best practices in Manitoba and Canada
  • Strong problemsolving skills and the ability to make decisions based on accurate and timely analysis.
  • High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results orientation.
  • Strong computer skills, proficient in computer programs and software, including data analysis and management tools.
  • Ability to speak Ojibwe, an asset
