**AVRCE - General Labourer (West Hants - Term position)

West Hants Area (term position)

8 hours per day/Monday to Friday (7:00am-3:30pm)

Rate of Pay:
As per CUPE Collective Agreement ($16.56)

Term effective immediately until September 30, 2023


Terms and conditions of employment, including wages, are in accordance with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Collective Agreement Local 3876.


Reporting to the Property Services Supervisor, the General Labourer will be assisting maintenance staff within the Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education.


Responsibilities will include:

  • Provide labour, assist with maintenance, construction and demolition of school buildings and grounds maintenance in compliance with established practices and standards.
  • Receive and/or pick up items from suppliers.
  • Responsible to maintain accurate records of work performance through use of the work order system.
  • Maintain assigned vehicles and equipment in compliance with established practices and standards.
  • Travel from site to site as required.
  • Perform duties in compliane with school, Operations department and Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education policies and procedures; including occupational health & safety, WHMIS and the laws of the Province of Nova Scotia.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
  • Ability to drive a truck with a trailer for transporting the mower is a requirement.
  • Physically able to perform required duties of the position including lifting.
  • Experienced with operating lawn mowing equipment, painting and general construction would be an asset.
  • Experience with gas powered equipment would be an asset (chain saw, whipper snipper).
  • Must be able to work with mínimal supervision.


The successful applicants will mainly be assigned to do grounds work, including lawn mowing, brush cutting, whipper snipping, line painting etc.


  • Must be able to perform outdoor work in all types of weather (sunny, hot, cold, rain).
The successful applicant will be required to provide a Criminal Record Check and a completed Child Abuse Registry.
