    Description

    The School of Environment and Geomatics is seeking an instructor to teach in the Geographic Information System (GIS) programs. Under the supervision of the School Chair, the successful applicant will have the education and experience to provide instruction in some or all of the following courses, depending on qualifications and course availability: Remote Sensing using QGIS (online), Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (online), Introduction to LiDAR (online), Introduction to GIS (in-person), Data Management in GIS (in-person), Internet Mapping (in-person), Introduction to CAD for GIS (in-person), GIS Project Management (in-person), GIS Analysis and Automation (in-person), GIS Analysis and Automation (in-person).

    Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction to students.
  • Deliver GIS and/or remote sensing courses in in-person and online classrooms.
  • Use industry standard software (proprietary and open source).
  • Develop and deliver teaching strategies and assessments that meet course outcomes and promote learning.
  • Evaluate students, including providing constructive and meaningful feedback to students.
  • Actively contribute to the college and the school, including participate in school and relevant program meetings.
  • Develop or update curriculum according to Selkirk College values, policy, and procedures.
  • Maintain positive relationships with colleagues and other members of college staff.
  • Protect student information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the School Chair or Dean.
  • Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated expertise with QGIS and ArcGIS Pro software with remote sensing and GIS applications.
  • Remote Sensing:

  • Application of fundamental concepts related to the physical principles of remote sensing.
  • Experience with: Remotely sensed image pre-processing image enhancement techniques and image classification.Change detection analysis and biophysical modelling with remotely sensed data.Open data catalogues.
  • GIS and data:

  • Application of fundamental concepts in Geographic Information Science such as spatial data models, cartography, coordinate systems and datums, data visualization, data exploration and management, spatial data analysis, and editing.
  • Application of GIS project management skills, including organizational skills and tools, leadership orientations, budgeting, project management software and other aspects of the project work environment.
  • Experience with: Demonstrated expertise with ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online software.Scripting in Python to automate vector and raster analysis workflows.ArcGIS Pro model builder and Python IDE environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach: In-person course delivery experience.Previous use of a learning management system like Moodle.Demonstrated ability to work with students with diverse backgrounds and academic abilities.Teaching students at the post-secondary level.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to contribute to school and/or college initiatives.

  • Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in Geomatics, GIS, Remote Sensing or related field
  • Two to three years teaching experience in a post-secondary environment
  • Industry remote sensing, project management and GIS experience is desired.

    This is a short-term, part-time (65%) replacement position commencing August 6, 2024, and ending June 27, 2025, or upon the return of the incumbent. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Selkirk College Faculty Association Collective Agreement. The salary range is $2, $4,341.23 bi-weekly (at 100% appointment) and is based on qualifications and experience.
