Students are provided with the opportunity to experience different areas of law, giving you a comprehensive articling experience in social justice.

$62,507.00 per annum prorated for 10 months (approximately 1,202 per week) plus benefits.

Reporting to:
Director of Litigation and Director of Business Law
Key accountabilities:
- As counsel to the corporation, GCO provides effective strategic and legal advice to LAO.
- Leases, contracts, procurement for goods and services, other legal documents
- Human Rights claims
- Civil litigation, employment and labour law
- Panel Management matters
- Applications for Public Funding, i.e. Rowbotham, Amicus, J.G.
- board proceedings
- stakeholders
- complaints and investigations
- property liens
- refusals of legal aid coverage in accordance with LAO eligibility policies
- Freedom of Information (FOI) requests in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA)
Required skills & experience:
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice or public interest work
- Demonstrated excellent writing and oral communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Awareness of LAO's statutory mandate to provide high quality client service to vulnerable populations such as racialized communities, Indigenous communities, youth, and those experiencing mental health or addiction challenges and/or homelessness
- Awareness of access to justice issues facing LAO's clients
- Ability to function in French is an asset
