Your opportunity:


The Training Program Officer is dedicated to the tri-campus Animal User Training Program for staff and students who are engaged in research and teaching involving animals.

The Training Program Officer works to ensure the Program meets user needs and is compliant with requirements of the Candian Council on Animal Care.

The Training Program Officer leads the development of new training and ongoing updates to existing training modules and to related Standard Operating Procedures and other related documents.

The Training Program Officer will oversee training delivery and lab-managed training at all sites by periodically attending, and by ensuring syllabi are formalized and kept current through Training Committee review; and supporting transitioning of lab-based training with formal training modules within the centralized training Program.

The Training Program Officer contributes to communication strategies that keep the research community aware of changes in training standards and requirements;participates on and coordinates Animal User Training Committee meetings; follows up on action items.

The Officer ensures that logístical elements of training program (e.g., registration, function of online modules) are efficient and operational and worksto address and resolve technical IT/software needs by liaising with relevant technical staff.

The Training Program Officer contributes to tri-campus delivery of training by traveling to all three University campuses to oversee and/or deliver training andto liaise and support research and animal care staff training needs.


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Working with Animal User Training Committee, developing and implementing a comprehensive formal training program that supports operational objectives and compliance for tricampus Animal User Training Program for staff and students engaged in research and teaching involving animals
  • Participates on the Animal User Training Committee and additionally supports the committee by scheduling meetings, preparing meeting materials, taking meeting notes and tracking actions.
  • Working with local trainers to support their needs and in collaboration developing learning outcomes for online and practical training modules
  • Developing content for instructional workshops and facilitating educational workshops and seminars
  • Researching and recommending educational technologies and best practices to implement in the training program (e.g., 3Rsrelated advancements)
  • Conducting post training session evaluation, analysis and recommendations for changes, responsible for ensuring standard operating procedures relate to training program are consistent and up to date.

Essential Qualifications:


  • Master's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years of relevant experience including training and advising others on technical procedures, regulations and guidelines pertaining to the care and use of laboratory animals in science; preferably in a research environment
  • Demonstrated experience in performing technical procedures on animals and an understanding of the principles of laboratory animal science and animal welfare
  • Strong understanding of Canadian animal use guidelines and regulations including those of: Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) and Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) or equivalent
  • Demonstrated organizational skills to manage multiple priorities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills with ability to act with tact and sensitivity in working with a variety of contacts,
  • Demonstrated success in delivery of training as well as excellent presentation skills and ability to support learners and participants of varying levels of understanding and experience; excellent collaboration skills to work with a variety of instructors to support the development and delivery of training sessions
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in collaboration with the animal care team, with leadership and with the University's Animal User Training Committee
  • Problemsolving skills and a resolutionfocused approach, as well as ability to work with confidential and sensitive information
