Position Overview:


Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, the Laboratory Technician performs a variety of support functions using accepted safety procedures including: phlebotomy, receiving, sorting and processing of specimens following established procedures and guidelines, preparing specimens referred out to other testing sites, performing temperature and maintenance checks on equipment, performing limited testing under direct MLT supervision, maintaining responsibility for inventory and supply control, observing and understanding Hospital and departmental policies and procedures while maintaining and protecting patient confidentiality.

Requirements:


  • MLPAO / OSMT Certificate
  • Completion of Laboratory Technician, Laboratory Assistant certificate program from a recognized institution
  • Minimum 1 year current hospital laboratory experience
  • Ability to prioritize and organize daily work
  • Well developed communication skills (oral & written) in English
  • Proven ability to function effectively as a member of multidisciplinary team
  • Protects patient confidentiality
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to SHN's comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff safety, patient safety, environmental safety and participates in regular inservice education in this area.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to customer service when dealing with patients, colleagues, volunteers and other members of the community and public.
  • Exposure to Lean principles, an understanding of methodologies and tools and a commitment to the use of these in support of providing the best healthcare experience possible to our patients
  • Demonstrates values consistent with SHN's Code of Conduct and is committed to fostering a healthy and positive work environment in accordance with Health & Safety policy and legislation.
  • Utilize protective equipment provided and identify and reports hazards
  • Engages in ethical conduct and strives to understand and appreciate the diversity of our patient/staff population and community
  • Excellent work performance and attendance
