We support the resilience and recovery of people in distress including those affected by mental illness or suicide by providing crisis intervention; safe, long-term and affordable housing; peer support; suicide grief and family support; information and referral support; and providing opportunities to improve your wellness.


Job Summary


Reporting to the Senior Director, External Relations, the Marketing and Communications Coordinator is an integral part of CMHA-Edmonton's external relations team.

This position crafts and delivers our message to the community, promoting the agency and mental health as a cause.


Job Duties and Responsibilities

External Communications and Marketing

  • Implement marketing and communications plans to promote agency programs, events, and initiatives.
  • Promote agency programs and services to key audiences including funders and other supporters, current and prospective participants and their families, and key external partners.
  • Share stories and authentically present the lived experience of mental health through the people we support.
  • Engage with and provide relevant content to diverse audiences on the topic of mental health.
  • Website content development and management, ensuring it is up to date, accurate, and engaging.
  • Coordinate the production of key documents such as the Annual Report, and collateral material to promote the agency and its programs.
  • Social media management, including generating and posting content.
  • Content development through multimedia tools, including video, audio productions, graphics (using programs like Canva) and visualizations of program data and information (or work with external contractors to produce these). In particular, content that presents the stories of people with lived experience of mental health.

Internal Communications and Support

  • Produce internal newsletters, and content for internal communications tools such as Teams channels.
  • Monitoring, curating, and adapting external content to engage staff and volunteers.
  • Generate regular reports detailing social media and website analytics and performance.

Media Relations

  • Serve as a first point of contact for media outreach and inquiries.
  • Identify opportunities to promote the agency, its events, and its programs through traditional and new media.
  • Support, through media training and coaching, briefings, and capacity building, the ability of staff, volunteers, and clients with lived experience to speak to media.

Fund Development Support

  • Develop and implement marketing and communications plans to support fundraising initiatives including signature events.
  • Develop engaging content in different mediums to appeal to solicit donations and steward donors

Core Competencies and Responsibilities

  • Creates buyin and excitement for the agency among staff, volunteers, and external stakeholders.
  • Identifies strategic opportunities to increase awareness of the agency and the cause.
  • Oversees and evaluates work provided by relevant contractors and consultants.
  • Promotes a staff mindset which enhances the goals and objectives of CMHA-Edmonton.
  • Ensures that the Executive Team is informed of risk management issues, including those that have implications beyond existing policy or that may have the possibility of affecting the agency's reputation or resources.
  • Takes steps to identify, mitigate, and address any potential risks real or perceived to the agency, its events, and other work.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Postsecondary degree or diploma, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a communications role, ideally with demonstrated success in:
  • Social media and website promotion.
  • Media engagement and public awareness.
  • Creating content for different platforms and audiences.
  • Digital marketing.
  • Membership in a professional association such as IABC or CPRS is an asset.
  • Basic design skills, including familiarity with programs like Canva. Advanced graphic design skills and audiovisual production skills are an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License.
  • Acceptable Police Information Check.

Skills/Abilities

  • Selfstarter who can bring creativity and innovation to the role.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills including an ability to convey technical information and data in accessible language and formats, including data storytelling.
