    Planning Technician 1

    Nestled within the beautiful Rocky and Purcell Mountains, in the southeast corner of British Columbia, the East Kootenay region is a four-season destination. The region boasts unlimited year-round outdoor recreation including skiing, hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing, golfing, boating, hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing, mountaineering, white-water rafting, and snowmobiling. The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) serves over 60,000 permanent residents and approximately 25,000 to 30,000 seasonal residents. The region is diverse, and home to several unincorporated communities, eight municipalities, and four First Nations communities. This position is based out of our Cranbrook Office.

    Reporting to the Planning Supervisor, the Planning Technician 1 performs technical work related to the processing of land use and development applications.

    Qualifications & Experience include:
    • Planning undergraduate degree.
    • One year technical experience in land development or land use planning.
    • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and objectives of regional and community planning.
    • Knowledge of RDEK zoning bylaws and other land use regulations and procedures.
    • Knowledge of the Local Government Act and Regulations and the Agricultural Land Commission Act and Regulations.
    • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence.

    Key Skills and Abilities:

    • Computer literate with experience in land management systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Engage with fellow employees, the public and outside agencies in a courteous manner.
    • Explain complex technical concepts and plans to non-technical people.
    • Maintain composure and find solutions when dealing with difficult customers.
    • Organize work schedule to meet deadlines and priorities.
    • Read and interpret bylaws, maps, legal documents, land title information, relevant legislation, building and site plans.
    • Understand and apply methods of land use planning.

    The RDEK offers an attractive total compensation package, which includes a competitive salary, excellent benefits, a modified workweek and learning opportunities. This is a permanent, full-time (35 hours per week) Union position with a starting hourly rate of $42.18.
