    Description

    Locomotive Engineer/Conductor with Cando are responsible for providing safe and efficient rail car switching. Working in a fast-paced, customer oriented environment, the Locomotive Engineer/Conductor must work well in teams to maximize efficiency and safety, while demonstrating a strong initiative and organizational skills. This position works out of Edson to the Coal Valley area with a regular set schedule.

    Roles and Responsibilities

    • Ensure safe train movements and operation of the locomotive including conducting clear and concise job briefings and providing protection of train, track, and equipment
    • Apply CROR rules, special instructions, and switching procedures while operating as a Locomotive Engineer including operating switches and derails, coupling and uncoupling rail cars, managing air hoses, applying and releasing handbrakes
    • Perform daily inspection and testing of the locomotive brakes and safety devices; conduct site track and equipment inspections including air brake tests
    • Complete daily reports, daily logs, and other reports deemed necessary
    • Comply with all applicable operating rules, switching procedures and regulations imposed by government, the customer, our Class 1 Partners, and/or Cando; practice and promote safe work habits
    • Provide protection of train, track, and equipment; keep the interior of the locomotive safe, clean, and tidy
    • Promptly report all safety, equipment, and track problems to the Superintendent
    • Actively participate with the team and provide excellent customer service while promoting a superior company image
    • Exert best effort to protect human life, human safety, and company property
    • Participate in training or company initiatives as required

    Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

    • Excellent teamwork and strong customer service skills
    • Ability to read and write general documentation including safety briefings, policy and procedure manuals, and switching lists
    • Physically fit including the ability to pull self up and down from a railcar on a continuous basis, able to lift and twist air hoses, able to secure rail car brakes, derails, and switches
    • Ability to work in all weather conditions for up to twelve (12) continuous hours
    • Working knowledge of technology and computer systems with a willingness to use Excel and Outlook on a daily basis
    • Strong problem solving and decision making abilities
    • Ability to obtain and maintain required certification and Safety Critical Medical clearances including passing drug and alcohol screening
    • Ability to pass a criminal background check.

    Education & Experience

    • Must hold and maintain CROR certification
    • Locomotive Engineer qualification/experience is required
