Join CNL's Waste Management Function Team under the Waste Support & Oversight Services (WSOS) Division and contribute to the strategic execution of the Environmental Remediation Management Mission across various sites in Canada.


As a Waste Management Program Officer, you will play a pivotal role in guiding the development, implementation, and maintenance of the Waste Management Function Processes and Procedures.

Your responsibilities will encompass establishing and refining protocols to ensure the safe planning, generation, handling, processing, transporting, storage, and disposal of waste materials, with a focus on protecting workers, the public, and the environment while adhering to regulatory and licensing mandates.


This position offers an opportunity to engage with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders, facilitating effective communication, training, and collaboration to ensure seamless integration of CNL processes and procedures across diverse operational sites.

Additionally, you will contribute to ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing waste management strategies, thereby bolstering CNL's commitment to environmental sustainability and regulatory compliance.


What will you be doing
Functions and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Identify and address gaps in existing Waste Management Function requirements, processes and procedures through observations, assessments and reviews at CNL's sites and through benchmarking against other non-CNL facilities (nuclear & non-nuclear).
  • Assist in the development of processes to conduct verification and assessment of waste management practices.
  • Conduct site and facility level Waste Management Function compliance verifications and Waste Management Assessments of Waste Generators and Waste Receivers, with the objectives to identify noncompliances and opportunities for improvement.
  • Establish, document and maintain a system to compile sitespecific Function measures, waste data and records, including preparation of periodic summary reports.
  • Communicate Function requirements and opportunities for improvement through: a) assist in developing and delivering Waste Management Function Training, and b) presentations on Waste Management Function requirements at employee (safety, branch, interest group) meetings.
  • Interfacing with planning and technical staff in other parts of CNL, to meet CNL needs in a coherent integrated manner, with a particular focus on the following organizations: Cleanup Function, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG), Integrated Waste Strategy (IWS), Facilities Decommissioning and Environmental Remediation, Fuel Programme and Projects, Port Hope Area Initiative, Reactor Decommissioning, Waste Services and the Whiteshell Laboratories Closure Project.
  • Developing and/or supporting the development of technical plans for managing waste at various CNL sites across Canada.
  • Developing and/or supporting the development of discrete deliverables supporting work related to waste characterization, processing, packaging, transportation and disposal.
  • Overseeing the work of subcontract resources in the development and completion of technical deliverables.
  • Perform other duties in support of CNL's Waste Management Function.

What we are looking for:


Education:


At minimum, a Bachelors (Honours) in Engineering or Science from a university of recognized standing; or membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.


Experience:


  • Experience in collecting, analyzing and organizing complex data sets to make recommendations based on experience, industrybest practices or innovative approaches.
  • Experience resolving complex technical challenges, from both a strategic and executionlevel perspective.

Abilities and Skills:

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment, with stakeholders from across a largescale organization.
  • Must have a positive attitude and a commitment to providing support to the team to ensure deliverables are effectively met onschedule and onbudget.
  • Must be a quicklearner, and be willing to take various internal and external training courses related to waste management and/or project management.
  • Must be committed to transparent and meaningful engagement of stakeholders, with a demonstrated history of developing and maintaining longterm professional relationships.
  • Be highlydisciplined and honest, and will be committed to highquality delivery of assignments.
  • Have an exemplary work ethic that will be put towards helping the Waste Management Program Team realize its mandate and will be willing to support others in the division in realizing their objectives.
