The Opportunity:


The Shop Lead is responsible for the team that fabricates machines and equipment, and supports project set up and execution of tests and research projects.

You will be a member of a 4 person team of technical leads who are responsible for strategic skills such as electronics, instrumentation, numerical modeling, design and fabrication.

You will report directly to the Director of Operations.


The Technical Service Leads collaborate extensively with others in the Project Management team to ensure projects are completed to meet quality standards, on time and on budget.

Technical Service Leads generally split time between people management and operational duties on a basis of ~25/75%.


Duties and Responsibilities:

The following are the general duties of this position but are not inclusive of all the detailed tasks that may be required:

  • Supervising staff by providing expertise, training, work, and guidance at a high level training capacity and, where applicable, with up to a maximum of 10 direct reports
  • Overseeing input into assigning the duties of shop staff to operate the department at an optimum level
  • Supporting research and development projects at an advanced level of complexity with a wide range of variety in machining, welding, sheet metal work, mechanical, carpentry, painting, and fabrication, under the direction of Project Leaders, Project Managers or Program Directors
  • Managing inventory levels and ensuring test equipment is optimally maintained
  • Managing relationships with contractors many of whom are local to Humboldt
  • Monitoring the preparation of budgets for the shop and managing it effectively
  • Ensuring the maintenance of buildings, grounds, vehicles, and equipment is managed effectively by documenting usage and maintaining licenses
  • Providing estimates and monitor time and material costs incurred for projects that are most often for clients but may also be required for internal purposes
  • Comply with and monitor budgets for the department
  • Procuring vehicles, shop equipment, building upgrades, etc.
  • Developing a properly resourced team with the right tools to execute project tasks efficient and in a costeffective manner
  • Ensure that the shop is operated in a safe manner to protect staff, clients and bystanders by monitoring safety environment and developing and providing safety training to staff
  • Oversee reporting and documentation of issues and processes, including operator and parts manuals

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • General knowledge supervisory skills, blueprint and work instruction reading/interpretations
  • Advanced knowledge of shop equipment use
  • Knowledge of fabrication and mechanical production
  • Mobile machinery operation
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Creative problemsolving skills

Credentials and Experience:


  • Journeyman Trade with significant relevant experience (15+ years); or
  • Diploma or certificate (technician or technologist) with significant experience (15+ years); or
  • University undergraduate degree in applicable area with appropriate designation with 15+ years' experience.
