    Job Summary

    The Research Coordinator is responsible for research facilitation, planning, and management, and completion of grant applications, manuscripts and knowledge translation activities including web-based media. The Research Coordinator provides direct support to a principal investigator in the development and conduct of activities related to her research collaborations.

    Under the guidance of the principal investigator, the Research Coordinator interacts and liaises with Department of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy faculty, staff, and graduate students, and investigators, trainees, and youth/patient advisors involved in projects.

    Responsibilities include preparation of study protocols, human subjects ethics applications, coordination of participant recruitment and data collection, gathering qualitative and quantitative data, creating and updating knowledge translation media (including websites, social media), editing and uploading research manuscripts, conducting literature reviews and verifying reference lists, and responsibility for timely and orderly implementation of research-related tasks and records.

    Organizational Status
    Reports to the supervising professor, liaises with department manager and other researchers.
    Work Performed

    The Research Coordinator collaborates with the principal investigator to plan and coordinate research activities and events based on the priorities for independent and collaborative projects. The Research Coordinator is responsible for the completion of tasks and the provision of necessary guidance to all associated research staff and trainees. Current projects include a community-based collaboration to understand the impact of COVID-19 on youth and families experiencing mental health and substance use challenges, and the ongoing development of a program of research to understand the impact of supports on health outcomes for this population. Discrete activities and tasks related to completing these and other projects will also be assigned.

    Major responsibilities include:

    • Project management of research-related activities outlined by the Principal Investigator;
    • Leading province-wide quantitative and qualitative data collection;
    • Identifying and planning research strategies based on the priorities of the Principal Investigator; Identifying and refining research questions based on findings from literature reviews;
    • Synthesizing and summarizing literature reviews relevant to proposed research projects;
    • Developing, drafting, and reviewing study protocols based on literature review and knowledge gaps in the existing literature;
    • Managing all aspects of grant application submissions, including preparation of proposals, budgets, timelines, and curriculum vitae – Collaborating with research partners to implement and deliver study protocols;
    • Overseeing the implementation of research projects to ensure that funding agency and ethical requirements are met;
    • Leading or co-leading data collection, analysis, and interpretation;
    • With the PI, preparing manuscripts, articles, abstracts, posters and presentations for academic journals and conferences;
    • Coordinating documentation and communication for co-investigator meetings, manuscript development, and knowledge translation activities;
    • Ensuring comprehensive management of the research study records, including documents and communications in accordance with UBC and funding agencies;
    • Ensuring the development of standard operating procedures to optimize implementation of research projects and accounts adhering to UBC policies and guidelines;
    • Overseeing research grant expenditures (determining eligible expenses against budget allocations), transferring of funds as necessary, overseeing the maintenance of internal records;
    • Supervision of, delegation to, and monitoring of students or trainees, when applicable to project;
    • Contributing to an optimal workplace culture and environment;
    • Performing other related duties.

    Consequence of Error/Judgement
    Makes professional decisions and recommendations on all aspects of research work. Errors in performance of the above-related duties could have a significant impact on the effectiveness, reputation, collaboration, and financial status of the research project. Inappropriate judgment could result in fundamental flaws in the research results, in funding shortfalls for research grants or contracts, and loss of future research partnerships.
    Supervision Received
    Works independently under the general direction of the Principal Investigator. Research work is reviewed against achievement of project objectives and conformity to established standards.
    Supervision Given
    In collaboration with the Principal Investigator will be responsible for delegating tasks as appropriate to research student(s) and mental health consumers hired as peer research assistants involved in the research.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master's degree in a relevant discipline. Master's degree in a health related discipline (Master' preferred) with research training and/or thesis, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
    • Valid registration with the appropriate professional college in British Columbia is required if applicable (health professional applicants).
    • Training and/or education and experience in research coordination and scientific technical writing.
    • Experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience working in the field of supported employment and health services research.
    • Experience working in research environment, with relevant experience in developing, writing, technical materials (ethics, summary of research implementation, etc.), and implementing and managing research studies.
    • Exceptionally strong project management skills and ability to work independently.
    • Experience and demonstrated compassion working with persons with mental illness and substance use disorders.
