Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Generative Artificial Intelligence and Post-secondary Teaching and Learning

The Paul R.

MacPherson Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Excellence in Teaching plays a significant role in supporting the McMaster community to cultivate an environment where learning deeply matters, and teaching is valued and recognized.

Teaching and learning are the heart of what the Institute does through partnerships, and student-centred learning within a culture of learning and growth.

Responding to the surge of student and faculty interest in and use of generative AI in teaching and learning, this post-doctoral fellow will conduct research on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in post-secondary teaching and learning contexts.

Research contributions may shape university policies, inform administrative and pedagogical practices, and advance sector-wide understandings of the challenges and opportunities of generative AI to teaching and learning.

Co-supervised by the Vice-Provost, Teaching and Learning and the Associate Director, Central Programming of the MacPherson Institute, this postdoctoral fellow will be expected to contribute an interdisciplinary perspective on the topic of generative AI, conduct qualitative research in this area, and contribute to the design, delivery and evaluation of programming to support educators in responding to generative AI in teaching and learning contexts.

Potential areas of inquiry include:

  • Alternative assessments: adaptations to assessments to either (1) integrate generative AI into assessments or (2) alter assessments to minimize the impact of generative AI
  • Faculty and student perceptions of the value and risks of generative AI in learning experiences
  • Models of training and support for faculty responding to generative AI in course design and delivery

Previous experience:

  • PhD in any discipline; graduate work in Education or a related field would be an asset
  • Background in postsecondary pedagogy and theory, including assessment theory and design or equivalent combination of skills and experience
  • Qualitative research methods including study design
  • Superb writing and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to work in interdisciplinary contexts
  • Ability to work well, both independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to work with a range of disciplines' approaches to inquiry and scholarship, including education, humanities, social sciences, sciences, engineering, business, and health sciences

Salary:

$50,000/year for 1 year. Benefits will be provided
