(Gr schools and other educational programs and employs approximately 400 staff.

DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the School Principals, the District Principal of Indigenous Education, and in cooperation with the
Indigenous communities, and collaboration with classroom teachers, provides cultural and ʔayʔaǰuθəm (Tla'amin)
language instruction and intervention strategies to assist Indigenous students to improve academic and social emotional
success and enrich their school experiences.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide cultural enrichment and exposure, and assistance to Indigenous students to achieve academic
success by coaching, explaining, and enhancing their learning experiences, in classroom small group and
individual settings referring to professional staff as required.

  • Assist in the teaching function by collaborating with teaching staff in the delivery of educational service to
students.

  • Serves as primary contact for Indigenous students seeking assistance for personal, learning, or behavioural
needs and undertake initial intervention strategies as required and refer to school and community resources
including home visits as appropriate.

  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team with teachers, counsellors, and administrators, and participate in
planning, organizing, and promoting cultural pride and awareness.

  • Provide assistance and support for the implementation of programs aimed at developing the educational,
emotional, social, and cultural abilities of Indigenous students.

  • May participate in schoolbased team meetings and other consultative meetings as required and consults
with professional staff, parents, and Indigenous communities regarding the needs of Indigenous students.

  • Assist school staff and students in understanding the role of Indigenous culture, heritage, and spirituality in
the lives of Indigenous students.

  • Monitor and track students' progress, performance, attendance, academic achievement, and concerns
regarding vulnerable students, and report on same to the appropriate teachers, principals, and counselors.

  • Encourage regular participation in activities and the timely completion of assignments and exercises.
  • Assist with the student selfidentification of Indigenous ancestry, and the collection of data for the school
and the District.

  • Act as a positive role model and advocate for all Indigenous students in areas including the academic, social,
and cultural aspects of the student, and may include career/life planning and transition.

  • Engage in problem solving with students and families using resolution methods.
  • May assist in the planning, organization and supervision of cultural and social events, field trips, sports, and
other activities.

  • May be required to perform other related duties, as assigned by District Principal.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum secondary school graduation or equivalent. Preferred postsecondary training.
  • Specialized training in education, counselling, family assistance, childcare work, behaviour management, or
social work.

  • A minimum of 2 years related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Preferred, knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture, ʔayʔaǰuθəm language, heritage, and
spirituality.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain respect for and from students.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness, initiative, and flexibility in identifying and performing tasks in support of
educational goals for Indigenous students.

  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • An awareness of the requirement for confidentiality of sensitive information seen or heard.
  • Ability to utilize a personal computer.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver's license and willingness to obtain a class
  • Ability to consult with parents, Indigenous communities, professional staff, and community resource
personnel.

  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
