Work Requirement
This role will be based out of our Vancouver office and is full time onsite.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Lab Management & Leadership:
  • Manages lab operations team and actively works to maintain an efficient, clean, safe and wellorganized laboratory.
  • Provides leadership, mentorship, and technical guidance to Lab Operations team.
  • Works with individuals and leadership in R&D to understand laboratory needs and approaches the role with a mindset of continuous improvement and solutionbased thinking.
  • Seeks to understand current laboratory workflows and future R&D plans.
  • Actively works to foster an environment of effective and collaborative working relationships amongst employees, management and external partners. Identify and respond to bottlenecks and deficiencies concerning day to day lab operations (such as inventory management, scheduling of services, etc.) and establish and improve processes to support all lab operational functions.
  • Organize and manage annual lab shutdown and start up, restructuring, moves, or expansions.
  • Assist with forecasting of research general budget and managing lab operations budgets.
  • Involved in securing and maintaining required Material Transfer Agreements, licenses and permits, ensuring all documents are maintained and kept up to date. Liaises with Contracts and management to communicate needs and ensure necessary documentation is in place.
  • Lab Equipment, Supplies & Services:
  • Manages all laboratory facility operations, equipment and scheduling, including general preventative maintenance, installations, general repairs, shutdowns, upkeep of the facility, keeping clear service records of all work performed.
  • Contributes to the planning, projection and identification of space requirements for equipment, consults with key stakeholders to ensure input from all vested parties. Ensures plans are in compliance with relevant safety regulations.
  • Responsible for requesting service agreements and quotes and generating purchase requests for lab facility services and maintenance and approval of invoices for services such as lab coats, gas supplies, waste pickups, calibrations, etc.
  • Manages equipment monitoring and acts as the first point of contact (on call) for any equipment alarms.
  • Implements, oversees and controls inventory system used to monitor usage of reagents and consumables, ensuring reagents and consumables are properly stocked and documentation is in place.
  • Managing and maintaining Common Inventory and Non-Common Inventory and collaborating with the Logistics and Procurement team to implement changes, and liaising with the Research team as needed.
  • Lab Safety & Best Practices
  • Participates on the JOSHC and Biosafety Committee and, in collaboration with committee members, ensures lab practices support compliance with WorkSafeBC and other related regulations. Ensures that concerns and incidents are escalated, as appropriate.
  • Ensures lab licenses are in place and remain active.
  • Participates in the review of biosafety manual, safety guidelines and SOPs, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation. Assists with the rollout and implementation of related safety programs.
  • Manages the laboratory safety orientation program for new hires as well as the annual refresher training for all scientific staff. Tracks and ensures that H&S training is delivered to all employees that have access to the lab.
  • Designs and executes processes, policies, and procedures that ensure safe workplaces and protect employees and clients from potentially unsafe conditions, and cultivates a health and safety culture, with input from stakeholders.

Education and Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree, preferably with a focus in a Scientific area or Health & Safety and a minimum of 5 years' related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Indepth experience in a CL2 pharmaceutical/biotech laboratory and technical proficiency, knowledge of daytoday activities in a crossfunctional laboratory environment.
  • Experience managing a small team.

Skills and Abilities:


  • Has a strong grasp of OH&S and WorkSafeBC.
