As Canada's largest agency serving youth who are homeless, trafficked or at risk, we offer the widest range of services to hundreds of young people every day.

More than a place to stay, we provide 24/7 crisis shelter and transitional housing on-site and in the community, along with comprehensive services including education, counselling, health care, employment assistance, job training and after-care.

Since 1982, Covenant House has supported more than 100,000 young people.


We are seeking an expert Internal Communications Manager with excellent written and verbal communications, who has an eye to detail, is a gifted storyteller and collaborator.

This position will report to our Director of Brand & Communications.

You will be a part of a team of professionals responsible for elevating the Covenant House Brand and supporting development and other organizational teams.


Purpose of the position:

To provide consistent and excellent brand-focused, best in class, internal communications, that drives awareness on priority areas and supports effective employee engagement.

The Manager of Internal Communication must have a passion for communications and is responsible for building and implementing an annual internal communications plan that supports the agency's key priorities and continuously inspires our team.


Responsibilities:


  • Lead the implementation of Covenant House Toronto's internal communications strategy and annual plans, partnering with our Executive Director's office, People and Culture division and other teams across the agency.
  • Lead the content strategy for the agency's portal, a key internal communications tool used to keep staff informed, and work collaboratively with teams across the agency to ensure it is kept updated.
  • Responsible for keeping staff informed about any updates to Covenant House's brand and ensuring that staff have access to the agency's most current brand materials.
  • Develop internal messaging, manage approvals, and manage distribution of key messages that is consistent with current best practices.
  • Research, write and edit speeches, develop and distribute the agency's internal staff newsletter, review staff messages and other communication products for senior management.
  • Craft high level communications materials that provide storytelling and consistent narratives in an executive leader's voice.
  • Execute internal communications strategies and initiatives that support organizational objectives to achieve the agency's goal to be an employer of choice.
  • Manage and support organizationwide townhalls and other internal events that foster a positive workplace culture.
  • Ensure consistent communications while anticipating sometimes conflicting priorities and demands, and future trends.
  • Establish relationships with and become a trusted communications advisor to the agency's leadership and program teams.
  • Innovate using the latest tools, techniques and trends within internal communications and employee engagement.
  • Support the Director of Brand and Communications and team ensuring all internal communications activities align with the agency's strategic and operational plans.
  • Other duties, as required.

Skills & Qualifications:


  • Minimum of 57 years of related work experience in a senior communications role.
  • Undergraduate degree required, preferably in communications, public relations, marketing or journalism with experience managing deadline driven projects.
  • Recent experience managing a team and completing annual performance plans.
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills with the ability to distill complex information into clear, concise messaging for staff. Have exceptional attention to detail.
  • Well versed in communications practices, particularly in the areas of internal communications strategy and planning, and employee engagement.
  • Collaborative team player with strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and mentor teams to succeed.
  • Flexible and resourceful with the highest degree of professionalism.
  • Calm under pressure with an ability to work flexibly to tight deadlines.
  • Aptitude for problem solving.
  • Ability to deal effectively with ambiguity and frequent changes.
  • Excellent written, oral and presentation skills.
  • Experience within a large complex public sector organization with many lines of business an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience managing corporatewide or largescale projects.
  • Bilingualism in English and French is an asset.
