The Role


The Commercial Tobacco Cessation Health Promotion Specialist will be responsible for the delivery of the Métis Nation of Ontario's Commercial Tobacco Cessation Program.

The Health Promotion Specialist will report to the MNO's Manager of Mental Health and Addictions.

The role will include strategically planning, delivering, monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on the Métis Nation of Ontario's Commercial Tobacco Cessation Program.

Further, the position will collaborate and/or engage with programs or cultural experts in the development of cessation resources.

Finally, the position will collaborate with and support the manager with programs/services design, budget formation, policy, and operating guidelines, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.


Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Utilize specialized knowledge to meet program, Branch, and organizational needs
  • The Tobacco Cessation Specialist will use researchbased and best practices information to develop health promotion material.
  • Develop programs, policies, and proposals based on demographic, social, and economic research and analysis
  • The Health Promotion Specialist is responsible for providing individual and group support for adult and youth audiences for tobacco cessation.
  • Develop and deliver tobaccorelated presentations to community members, stakeholders, and internal programs.
  • Facilitate tobaccorelated training, including cessation and electronic cigarettes to frontline workers and staff.
  • Attend community events (i.e. health fairs) with program booth displays and offer educational resources and information.
  • Oversee coordination and evaluation of educational events
  • Oversee research, development, and design of educational materials and presentations using current research and statistical data.
  • Liaise with local, communitybased, and regional programs, agencies, and organizations to strengthen communications, and programming and to build new partnerships.
  • Oversee the program's communications strategy, which includes dissemination of program and tobaccorelated news and education through the MNO's website and social media platform via Facebook.
  • Develop and maintain the annual work plan and program budget and review it on a quarterly basis. Prepare reports for funder(s) and liaise with referring sources when required.
  • Keep current on new initiatives, and research in the related area of tobacco, and ensure all ages, community members, staff, etc., are aware.
  • Maintain and ensure confidentiality at all times.
  • Act within the guidelines of associated professional designations/standards
  • Conduct program and project evaluation, using a variety of research and evaluation tools
  • Respond to the needs of internal and external clients as required
  • Research practices and recommend changes or modifications to existing policies, practices, or positions
  • Develop communication tools to enhance understanding of issues
  • Promote, track, and measure compliance with program funding requirements by creating and implementing appropriate data collection, reporting, and/or recordkeeping processes
  • Deal with confidential and sensitive issues in a timely manner, with tact and discretion
  • Other reasonable duties as may be assigned

Qualifications

  • Strong desire to act in the service of the Métis Citizens, to advance and uphold rights and culture
  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work or Mental Health related discipline
  • TEACH (Training Enhancement in Applied Cessation Counselling and Health) certification
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to engage with individuals of diverse backgrounds
  • Experience utilizing Motivational Interviewing techniques or equivalent coaching experience
  • A high degree of technology literacy and proficiency in standard office equipment
  • Advanced communications skills, both written and verbal
