Position Announcement:
Nucleus Genetic Technician

Position Description:

To provide genetic program support at a Genesus genetic nucleus unit including liaison between Genesus program and on-farm personnel.

Duties:

Coordinate genetic program services (e.g. data collection, tissue sampling, onfarm oversight of R&D projects, etc.).
Conduct live animal ultrasound scanning and image interpretation in accordance with approved protocols. Successfully maintain ultrasound accreditation as required by Genesus. Maintain ultrasound and computer equipment in satisfactory working order.
Routine use of software used by Genesus (e.g. ultrasound software and onfarm software), as required.
Conduct onfarm data collection, including animal identification, weights, animal tissue/blood samples, animal selection and routine genetic program procedures with adherence to protocols, as required.
Data entry, editing and transfer, maintain tissue sample inventory and records database, and transferring samples to external laboratories, as required.
Provide R&D project support for data collection, protocol implementation and interaction with Genesus and unit staff, as required.
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Experience, and Requirements:

Experience with pig or livestock production preferred but not required.
Ability and willingness to work in a farrow to finish pig unit. Requires routine handling and data collection on pigs from birth to weaning, lifting of pigs weighing up to ~15kg, plus handling, management and data collection on pigs up to ~300 kg.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to learn the operation of ultrasound equipment and software.
Experience with computer use and software including Microsoft Office or equivalent.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
Possession of a valid driver's licence.
