**Technology Accessibility Specialist -Full Time Temporary 12 months

  • For over 60 years the Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion (BACI), a grassroots and Disability Confident organization, has been supporting people with disabilities across the life span to live a 'good life'. We've learned a lot over those years and our learning has shaped the evolution of our services, our advocacy efforts and the way we help build inclusive communities.
    BACI is hiring a Technology Accessibility Specialist . This is a new role which will support greater equity in access to technology. This role will focus on the development of support required to make effective use of virtual resources for people with cognitive disabilities.
  • What does this role do:
  • The goal of this position is to test and adapt a new role structured to support those experiencing multiple barriers to accessing and utilizing technology effectively. This role will embed a person-centered approach to tech support including a focus on adapting communication, providing mobile supports and navigating the unique barriers experienced by those with a developmental disability and the staff or network supporting them. The role will evolve as we try different approaches and understand which mix of strategies are most effective.
  • Person Centred Tech support
  • relationship building, understanding the unique contexts and approaches to technology.
  • Adapting IT communication, documentation, and training to be accessible to diverse learners.
  • Develop and curate a library of tech support resources accessible to those with a developmental disability working to test and refine different approaches.
  • Develop new training materials and programs for support staff to assist both their ongoing use of technology and those they're supporting, Provide input to the development of this new role through reflection, testing and iteration strategies and interventions.
  • QUALIFICATIONS
  • A degree or diploma in human services, information technology or a related field, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 2 years working with and empowering persons who are marginalized, stigmatized and isolated.
  • Experience designing and delivering effective training materials for diverse audiences, preferably those experiencing multiple and complex barriers.

  • Ability to take initiative, and get things done in an organized and methodical way.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to adapt communication styles to meet the needs of diverse audiences and learning styles.
  • Familiarity with accessible and plain language communication
  • Reflective and Adaptive if something isn't working, take a different approach. Comfort using a variety of technology (Office 365, gsuite, PC/Mac Operating Systems) willingness to learn tech support functions.
  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND REQUIREMENTS
  • TB clearance.
  • Current Class 5 BC driver's license and adequately insured vehicle.

  • COVID19 Vaccination
  • Basic First Aid and CPR within three months of employment. Non-Violent Crisis Prevention and Intervention this training will be provided upon hire.
  • This position requires the ability to function independently in dynamic situations. This role is expected to be performed at various BACI locations and out in the community. Some remote work allowed. This position has a flexible schedule, 37.5 hours per week.
  • COMPENSATION $65,000 salary, plus competitive benefits package. Temporary 12month contract position.
