KEY FUNCTION:


Support the clinical and technical teams by assisting with various tasks in the provision of safe and efficient hemodialysis to chronic and acute hemodialysis dependant patients.


REPORTING:

Under the general direction of the Manager, In-Centre Dialysis & Regional Renal Program Data and Reporting.


DUTIES:


  • Prepare and setup patient health record in CyberRen (Electronic Medical Record).
  • Prepare setup and prime dialysis machines predialysis (approximately 12 per patient shift).
  • Disconnect tubings, clean and disinfect dialysis machines post dialysis and in between patients as per unit policy.
  • Troubleshoot machine alarms, remove machines and complete online technical service repair report as required.
  • Enter all predialysis required lab work in the Meditech system.
  • Complete predialysis weight, blood pressures, temperature and record in patient electronic record.
  • Assist in moving and positioning patients and equipment.
  • Assist with patient care and activities of daily living as required (e.g. patient comforts, transfers via wheelchair, stretcher or bed, toileting, pre, during and post dialysis as required).
  • Perform post dialysis vital signs and weights as requested by the RN.
  • Prepare dialysis setups and stock for next shift of incoming patients.
  • Provide assistance in planning corrective actions to ensure safety for patients and staff.
  • Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  • Participate in hospital training as required.
  • Assist with improvement initiatives as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:


  • Minimum of a Personal Support Worker certificate from an accredited college.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certificate is required.
  • Completed Dialysis Assistant certificate program is preferred.
  • Ministry of Labour "Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps" training certificate is required.

EXPERIENCE:


  • Minimum of six (6) months' Personal Support Worker (PSW) experience in a hospital setting within the last three (3) years.
  • Previous dialysis experience is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:


  • Demonstrated professional working knowledge of all equipment used in the delivery of patient care.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Hospital Association/Ontario Medical Association Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocols.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently as a team member in a fast paced environment in stressful situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and communicate with patients, families, and healthcare workers.
  • Demonstrated computer skills with intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and applicable patient information systems.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Demonstrated compliance with HSN's privacy policy.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the safety of coworkers and patients.
