Reporting to the Shelter Coordinator, this position provides support for the daily operations of both the Overnight Shelter locations.

The Shelter Assistant along with all other staff and volunteers will provide facilitation and support from a trauma informed approach, ensuring empathy, dignity, and respect for clients during their stay at the Shelter.

The Shelter Assistant will work with the Coordinator and community service providers engaged in the homelessness sector.

This includes facilitating daily operations for staff, volunteers and students, such as proper scheduling of shifts at both Shelters under the supervision of the Shelter Coordinator.

The Shelter Assistant will be responsible for helping with scheduling staff between both Temporary Seasonal Overnight Shelter locations.

QUALIFICATIONSEDUCATION

  • Current certification in First Aid/CPR an asset
  • Mental Health First Aid Training considered an asset
  • Naloxone Training or willingness to be certified
KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE

  • Experience with being a personal assistant
  • Knowledge of harm reduction practices and ability to train others in these practices
  • Experience working with people who are chronically homeless
  • An understanding of/or demonstrated practice of antiracism/antioppressive practices

SKILLS

  • Must possess a valid driver's licence
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to support documentation and related administration duties, as well as to relate to clients, emergency response personnel and other health care professionals in a calm and professional manner
  • Demonstrated superior skills in the areas of teamwork and problem solving
  • Advanced computer skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of local community resources and referral processes

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Work is performed under the direction of the Shelter Coordinator, as well as agency policies and procedures, Health and Safety procedures, and Regional policies and Procedures
  • In accordance with the Start Me Up Niagara policies and procedures, the position requires a Vulnerable Sector Records Check
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays
  • Must demonstrate an acceptable comfort level in working with individuals with compromised mental health and addictions, and be capable of maintaining objectivity in order to perform consistently with the mission and values of Start Me Up Niagara
  • Consistent travel between shelter locations required

RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the Shelter Coordinator, the Shelter Assistant will facilitate operations for the Temporary Seasonal Overnight Shelter such as:

  • Assist with work and provide support to the Shelter Coordinator, Team Leads and Shelter Supports Workers
  • Keep the Program Manager and Human Resource Manager advised of any concerns or employee situations including critical injury reports Training and orientation of new staff, students and volunteers
  • To motivate and retain qualified staff; provide effective performance feedback to staff on an ongoing basis to ensure staff are working at a satisfactory performance level
  • To promote networking and alliance building with other nonprofit agencies for the purpose of increasing the effectiveness of the Shelter
  • Participate in regular review meetings on matters including policy and procedure development
  • The Shelter Assistant will communicate with the Shelter Coordinator for approvals, and or direction as required
  • Assist in facilitation and participate in ongoing training
  • Manage inventory and order supplies for the Shelters
  • Continuous monitoring of environmental risk, Health and Safety, and capacity of the Shelters
  • Adopt a team approach working in coordination with community partners as needed
  • Provide dignified service in a timely manner
  • Other duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Adhere to Shelter Program Manual/Policies and Procedures
  • Complete the Checklists in collaboration with the Shelter teams
  • Ensure all documentation is complete in accordance with Start Me Up Niagara policies
  • Conduct and document fire and lockdown drills as needed
  • Liaise all staff schedule changes including monitoring of Volunteer signup schedule
  • Complete monthly data and reporting to the Shelter Coordinator as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned
