PROFILE

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organizes and manages litigation files.
  • Calculates litigation time lines, maintains due case reports and ensures deadlines are met.
  • Liaises with clients, administrative assistants and professionals.
  • Liaises with Court registrars and clerks.
  • Liaises with stenographers and translators as necessary.
  • Liaises with process servers to handle all aspects of serving and filing court documents
  • Handles electronic service and filing directly with all parties and the Court registry, in Canada and abroad when required.
  • Drafts, assists in drafting, or reviews court documents such as Affidavits, Motions, Affidavits of Documents, Bills of Cost, etc.
  • Creates a document database, crossreferences productions and exhibit documents, and maintains copies of transcripts for searching purposes.
  • Learns and uses litigation software as needed, particularly litigation software used by the Federal Court and the Ontario Superior Court.
  • Organizes cases for trials.
  • Assists in setting up courtrooms and electronic access during trials.
  • Provides litigation support prior to and during trials and hearings.
  • Prepares charts, chronologies and summaries of documentary evidence for use on discovery and trial.
  • Attends virtually or in person before registries of Federal Court of Appeal, Ontario Court of Appeal, Federal Court, or Ontario Superior Court to review or file court documents.
  • Assists with any development and/or training that would be of benefit to the group (lawyers, assistants and/or clerks)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Law Clerk diploma and a minimum of five years of legal experience as a Law Clerk/Paralegal combined with knowledge of current legal policies and procedures.
  • Experience with Federal and/or Ontario Superior Court.
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Word and Excel), Kofax and/or Adobe
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational, time management and problemsolving skills.
  • The ability to effectively handle larger files.
  • The ability to work independently as well as actively participate in and support a large team.
  • Bilingualism (English/French) is highly desirable, other language skills are also welcome, but not essential.
