The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers students the opportunity to pursue an exceptional, high quality education in Canada's largest mechanical engineering department.

Position summary

Duties

  • 5axis hybrid additivesubtractive machining algorithms development including developing algorithms for conformal slicing for surfacing and overlay operations, 3D data processing and manipulation, and working with different methods such as: Graph theory, Tree optimization, and Data architecture
  • Developing algorithms for 3D metrology systems work and welding, overlay, additive manufacturing and machining operations
  • Carrying out research equipment design, purchasing requests, and writing specifications and justifications for equipment purchases.
  • Research new products, tests, and methodological instruments and reports to the principal investigator relative to the feasibility, quality, and benefits of such new developments.
  • Assists in supervision of graduate students, and student workers in the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical, Chemical, or Computer engineering or a closely related discipline
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in:
  • 3D vision and 3D scanning: Knowledge in structured light 3D scanner with high density point cloud, optic and parameters for best scanning condition including laser power, focal distance encoding strategy, fiducial marker recognition
  • Point cloud treatment and post processing: knowledge in registration and segmentation of point cloud using fast point feature histograms, iterative closest point algorithm, support vector machine, be comfortable with associated python libraries such as open3D, pyvista, etc.
  • Cluster and space partitioning, including graphs and tree optimization algorithms
  • Point cloud processing and mesh reconstruction, be comfortable with methods to go from point cloud to mesh and vice versa, including screened poisson reconstruction, ball pivoting, alpha shape reconstruction, disk sampling, euler smoothing methods, outliers identification technics, know how to use cloud compare, meshlab, meshmixer.
