Work Arrangements:

We are currently working remotely, and we will be moving to a hybrid model when our office renovation is complete (approximately September 2023), coming into the office 25% of the time (4-5 days a month).


The Opportunity:

The Vice President, Public Portfolio Management is a leadership role responsible for the overall management of Public Portfolio Management.

S/he will be a key member of the investments team and responsible for the development and execution of the public portfolio strategy for the general funds of Equitable Life.

This VP will be a Portfolio Manager for internally managed segregated funds and designated pension plan assets. S/he will be responsible for overseeing the implementing of tactical portfolio management across a variety of investment-grade portfolios.


What you will be doing:


  • Lead the public portfolio management, working with private portfolio management, to achieve a cohesive and suitable strategy for the company's general funds in alignment with the strategic asset allocation.
  • Lead portfolio manager for public assets including equities, preferred shares, and public government and corporate debt.
  • Oversee asset allocation across asset classes including the allocation of assets between cash, public government and corporate bonds, preferred shares, and common equities, as well as working with the VP private markets on the allocation between public and private markets, within the ranges defined in the SIPP. This asset allocation across asset classes can significantly impact annual earnings
  • Direct all members of Public Markets to coordinate tactical fund management initiatives within the overall strategy.
  • Responsible for relative value assessments amongst assets for suitability to the overall portfolio.
  • Responsible for ensuring the credit quality of the portfolio, especially within public credit and preferred shares, is maintained while achieving the yield requirements of the business.
  • Oversee the management of the derivative portfolio.
  • Evaluate and incorporate macroeconomic conditions; market cycles; and asset class specific indicators in the portfolio management to determine relative value and risk return considerations in the security selection process.
  • Lead portfolio manager for all internally managed segregated fund mandates, as well as providing business direction for the internal segfund platform. Further, lead portfolio manager for all general funds.
  • Hire, train and supervise AVPs, directors and managers in Public Markets.
  • Coordinate with VP Strategic Asset Allocation in the overall management of the asset allocation and investment risks in the company, especially interest rate risk.
  • Significant contributor to development and execution of Investment Division overall strategy.
  • Has trading authorities as established in the Investment Guidelines.
  • Member of Senior Risk and Capital Committee and Senior Investment Committee.

Additional Responsibilities (encompassing Operational Risk):


  • Provide clear guidance and communication to ensure operational risk management policies are followed and objectives are met and well executed.
  • Identify, monitor and report on risk exposures to senior management and the Chief Risk Officer, including monitoring how the market or regulations are changing and the potential risks as a result of the change.
  • Follow established processes and procedures, identifying potential gaps, omissions or activities that could expose the organization to unnecessary operational risk
  • Establish business continuity plans and maintaining continuity readiness, ensuring compliance with BCM policies, standards, procedures, and guidelines.

What you will bring:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Commerce, Economics or Math; an MBA is preferred
  • Chartered Financial Analyst designation
  • Minimum 15+ years' investment experience with focus on fixed income including trading of corporate bonds, government bonds, and derivatives
  • Track record of investment decisionmaking ability; experience with credit strategies.
  • Knowledge of insurance investing or pension investing an asset.
  • Excellent negotiation, influencing, and interpersonal skills with a record of building and maintaining effective working relationships with key internal stakeholders.
