    The Sustainability Program Lead – Plastics & Packaging will be integral part of the Sobeys national Sustainability team and play a key role in implementing key initiatives related to the "Planet" pillar Corporate Sustainability strategy. The Program Lead will be an integral role in positioning Sobeys as one of Canada's leading retailers taking action to tackle consumer packaging waste and creating circularity in the Canadian retail industry. Reporting to the Manager, Sustainability, the role will liaise with a variety of functions across the business as well as external partners, and provide support to our team's sustainability efforts

    Here's where you'll be focusing:

    • Execute and/or support a broad range of internal programs and initiatives related to existing key plastics and packaging priorities, particularly addressing regulatory compliance and actions to achieve plastics and packaging reduction goals, in support of Sobeys' national Sustainability Strategic Plan
    • Key contact for business teams as it relates to plastics and packaging
    • Lead and/or support meetings on behalf of the department, primarily the Circular Packaging Committee
    • Support the development and implementation of Sobeys' Plastic Waste Challenge (or related initiatives) with internal and external project partners
    • Build, maintain and enhance strong relations with internal stakeholders (e.g. merchandising, sourcing, legal) and external groups and suppliers in order to collaborate and support on key material issues such local By-Laws on single use packaging, prevention and recovery of packaging materials, packaging alternatives, and validation sustainability attribute claims
    • Maintain relationships with regulatory agencies (municipal, provincial and federal), advocacy groups, and industry associations to ensure there is business representation and compliance
    • Work cross functionally to ensure compliance against plastics and packaging policies, procedures, and guidelines, as well as collect, track and validate data across key performance indicators
    • Identify emerging innovations and sustainability opportunities related to the industry
    • Identify opportunities to build on the sustainability partnerships portfolio
    • Support the compilation of data and development of the annual Sustainable Business
    • Develop subject matter expertise and ongoing support as it relates to sustainable packaging, globally and within a Canadian context

    What you have to offer:

    • Passionate about sustainability
    • Post-secondary education in environmental science, sustainability or related field of study
    • Knowledge of environmental, social and governance issues related to plastics and packaging in the food and goods industry, combined with an ability to interpret these issues and their impact to Sobeys operations
    • 3+ years' related professional experience in food industry (experience in operations or packaging for the food industry, a strong asset)
    • Experience in project management
    • Proven track record to manage and execute multiple projects simultaneously
    • Attention to detail and commitment to deliver high-quality work products
    • Excellent research and analytics skills
    • Advanced skills in Microsoft office suite (e.g. PowerPoint, Excel)
    • Experience in supporting actions aligned with the Government of Canada's Action Plan on Zero Plastic Waste, a strong asset
    • Bilingual in English and French (written and oral), a strong asset, the candidate will be expected to work with peers in other provinces in the expansion, development and implementation of tools and processes across Canada, as well as provide support to Sobeys employees across Canada
