What can I expect to do in this role?: Within a maximum security correctional facility, you will:

  • Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and repair duties including installing, renovating, and inspecting duties
  • Assist other trades personnel and contractors as needed
  • Operate, troubleshoot and repair all heating, ventilation, fire systems and maintain various pumps/burners, water softeners, kitchen items, grounds equipment, replacing and cleaning filters, lubricating, belt tightening, etc.
  • Repair and maintain tubular steel furniture, security screens, steel structures, security and nonsecurity locks
  • Perform routine repairs and preventative maintenance
  • Coordinate and plan new maintenance projects
  • Perform emergency repairs
  • Complete and maintain accurate tracking logs and records
  • Perform other duties, as assigned
  • NOTE: this position works within a secure correctional facility and will oftentimes work within the vicinity of and around inmates, including working with and providing direction to inmate helpers.

How do I qualify?:


Mandatory:


  • You are licensed in one or more of the skilled trades recognized in Ontario
  • Valid First Aid and Heartsaver Certificate OR the ability to obtain upon employment

Specialized Knowledge and Experience:


  • You have advanced knowledge of at least one recognized skilled trade as well as working knowledge of other skilled trades and semiskilled trades (such as carpentry, plumbing, welding, brick laying)
  • You have knowledge of operation/maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning/fire systems and associated instrumentation/control systems
  • You can perform major and minor repairs, renovations and construction projects
  • You have experience planning and performing a wide variety of maintenance, repairs, and renovation tasks
  • You have knowledge of blueprints, schematics and specification diagrams/drawings
  • You are experienced in the safe use of power equipment and hand tools

Health and Safety Knowledge:


  • You have knowledge of relevant legislation (such as Occupational Health and Safety Act and WHMIS), municipal bylaws and codes, and provincial building codes
  • You have demonstrated ability to understand and comply with organizational policies and protocols in order to acquire knowledge of institutional security practices and procedures

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:


  • You are able to discuss work projects with other trades personnel and liaise with correctional staff
  • You have written communication skills to complete reports on assigned projects as well as maintain accurate logs
  • You can train, instruct and supervise inmate helpers

Problem-Solving Skills:


  • You can assess and ensure safety of maintenance and construction projects, recognize workplace hazards and security breaches, and ensure prompt corrective action
  • You are able to determine the proper tools, methods, and labour needed to complete assigned work
  • You can plan and complete assigned work in a timely manner
