The Role and the Company

The
Environmental Manager role is based in Edmonton and reports directly to the Cement Plant Manager.


Responsibilities:


  • Comply with and exceed all health and safety regulations, requirements, and standards
  • Accountable for complete, accurate, and timely preparation and submittal for reports required under Federal, Provincial and Local regulations and permits
  • Ensure all environmental monitoring, reporting, and record retention is successfully completed for both the Cement Plant Site and the Cadomin Limestone Quarry
  • Ensure all Greenhouse Gas reporting (Provincial, Federal and Internal) is successfully completed and participate in associated working groups addressing GHG compliance policies
  • Interface as the company advocate for environmental issues with regulatory
  • Manage environmental and legal consultants performing work for Lehigh Cement
  • Manage the plant environmental budget
  • Investigate and resolve compliance problems, questions, or complaints
  • Liaison between the Company and the community on environmental matters
  • Represent Heidelberg Material on multistakeholder working group and organizations (eg: Community Liaison Group, Alberta Capital Airshed, CASA, ARC)
  • Ensure compliance requirements are met through organizational and procedural measures
  • Train company employees on environmental issues, regulations, and company policies
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge of relevant environmental and land use laws and regulations
  • Review and analyze current and proposed permits, laws, and regulations and effectively communicate impacts to management
  • Ensure air pollution control and measurement devices are maintained and operated according to the permit requirements and manufacturer's specifications and permits
  • Strategize and develop local responses to Heidelberg's Sustainability Objectives to meet implementation goals
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related environmental, scientific, or engineering discipline
  • A minimum of 5 years of proven successful environmental experience in industry
  • Working knowledge of Federal, Provincial and Local Regulations
  • Ability to independently learn and understand technical, regulatory, and external issues regarding the environmental programs at the plant
  • Ability to positively interact with regulatory agencies to ensure understanding of requirements and obtain achievable compliance requirements
  • Ability to independently audit and inspect industrial operations, identifying compliant or noncompliant environmental issues, and effectively communicate those findings to management
  • Ability to independently develop, lead, and implement effective environmental compliance strategies and management systems
  • Ability to effectively communicate required compliance activities to plant employees who are tasked with performing them
  • Experience and demonstrated ability managing environmental program
  • Ability to communicate with internal and external parties in a collaborative, positive manner, representing the Company's interests
  • Competence with computing and data historian software.
  • Proficient with SAP and environmental purchase requisition / purchasing order management.

Work Environment

  • Role operates at plant office and requires conducting business at manufacturing locations and job sites where the conditions include moving mechanical equipment, inclement weather, heat, humidity, and elevated noise levels.
