We're looking for our next Claims Examiner. Could It Be You?

You have your Post-secondary education ideally in law, business or finance, as well as your Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP), Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP) or Certified Risk Manager (CRM) designations or progression towards the designation is an asset.


Your primary responsibility will be the handling, evaluating, reserving and resolving of multi-line claims with a primary focus on commercial property and casualty claims, in accordance with established company policy and providing strong administrative support to the claims department.

  • Confirm and interpret coverage under applicable insurance contracts including identifying coverage issues, protecting Temple's rights and resolution of coverage issues.
  • Ensure claims are investigated, managed and assessed promptly and professionally including determination of potential and ultimate loss exposures, probable ultimate cost reserving, and managing claims to an appropriate conclusion.
  • Develop, analyze and maintain claim information to ensure reserves are maintained at appropriate levels and adverse exposure developments are recognized and acted upon in a timely manner.
  • Accountability for entry/maintenance of claim file data on the Temple claims system including posting reserves, issuing payments, summary memos, activity logs and file document management.
  • Retain and instruct/direct counsel and other external claim service providers.
  • Determine repair costs, replacement costs and depreciation values of commercial structures with Marshall & Swift building cost data and methodology.
  • Schedule/attend mediations, appraisals and other Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) meetings in Canada and USA.
  • Proactively manage claim file abeyance process.
  • Present claims before various committees/groups (consisting of management team and claims leadership) for evaluation/authority and prepare Large Loss Reports for committee/group and Pool members.
  • Validate the accuracy of payment requests and make prompt payments.
  • Participate in crossfunctional initiatives and projects on behalf of Claims, at the request of SVP, Claims or VP, Temple Claims.
  • Conduct and report on field claim reviews/audits at the offices of Managing General Agents (MGA), business vendors and new prospects.
  • Promote and implement a best practices, customer service orientation in the provisions of claims services to internal and external clients.
  • Report to reinsurers and respond to claim queries from reinsurers as required.
  • Keep abreast of current legal trends and legislative changes including continuing education through participation in relevant courses and seminars.
  • Assist with mentoring and training Temple claims team staff.

  • You have a college/university degree with emphasis in law, business or finance preferred.
  • You ideally have a minimum 7 to 10 years multiline claims experience, with a focus on commercial property claims.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong computer ability and working knowledge of Microsoft Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Outlook.
  • Excellent analytical, negotiating and investigative competencies.
  • Highly organized, detailed oriented and demonstrated ability to interpret standard techniques and practices.
  • Strong work ethic with good selfdiscipline and independently motivated
  • Ability/willingness to learn, change and experiment
  • Demonstrate accuracy and an eye for attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment and to function well under pressure.
  • High degree of flexibility and adaptability to changing environment and situations.
  • Good business and general insurance acumen.
