Position Summary:


Under the direction of the Daycare Supervisor, the Infant/Toddler Educator will provide hands-on childcare to children in Seabird Island Band's early childhood education programs, in accordance with all childcare licensing requirements and the philosophies, policies, and objectives established by Seabird Island Band Management.

Qualifications/Requirements:


  • Early Childhood Education Certificate and current license to practice, or IT Certificate or in process of completion.
  • Must be over 19 years of age.
  • Experience working with children in an Early Childhood Education environment.
  • Must provide satisfactory immunization and tuberculosis testing results.
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Excellent active listening, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build strong positive relationships with children, parents and coworkers.
  • Ability to balance competing priorities and to work under pressure.
  • Flexible and creative.
  • Must be warm and personable and enjoy working with children.
  • Must possess high professional and ethical standards.
  • Ability to adhere to Oath of Confidentiality and Seabird Island Band Policies and Procedures.
  • Knowledge, respect and understanding of Stó:lō culture, traditions and language is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with First Nations community and children is considered an asset.
  • Valid BC Driver's License, Class
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Child Intervention Check.

Primary Responsibilities:


Child Care:

  • Provide developmentally and culturally appropriate activities and experiences for the children.
  • Assist with meals and snacks, ensuring dietary needs are met.
  • Provide a safe (emotionally and physically) and healthy environment with flexible routines. Provide direct supervision of children, ensuring developmentally appropriate experiences.
  • Encourage parental involvement in children's learning.
  • Ability to honour individuality, diversity and children's emerging interests within community and family contexts.
  • Aid in the development of peer relationships, social behavior and supporting a child's resilience.
  • Records Keeping and Attendance Tracking:
  • Maintain attendance for children.
  • Follow the procedures for maintaining health records and for administrating medication.
  • Immediately report all accidents, injuries and illnesses to the Daycare Supervisor, and record such incidents in the communications book.
  • Immediately report all cases of (suspected) child abuse and or neglect to the Daycare Supervisor and /or follow the policy for reporting.
  • Assist in and participate in field trips.
  • Contribute to the ongoing operation of the center.
  • Attend and participate in regular staff meetings.
  • Follow licensing regulations.

Other:

  • Participate in community activities and functions as required by SIB and Chief and Council, including but not limited to Seabird Island Festival, and the Seabird Island Open House.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Manager, Director or CAO.
