2 Positions - Full-Time (40 hours per week)

May be scheduled between 2 Shelters to ensure 5 days

Who We Are:

Hope and Area Transition Society was established in 1994.

At that time, the intent of the Agency was to offer a haven for women and children fleeing domestic violence.

Our Transition House opened in a permanent location in 1995 and was officially named the Jean Scott Transition House. Jean Scott was a trailblazer for women's equality and was instrumental in the creation of our Transition House. The Transition House is the cornerstone of the agency.

Over the years, we have grown into
4 broad streams of services:
Domestic Violence / Substance Use / Youth and Family / Homelessness

As a result of the growth and development of the agency, Hope and Area Transition Society is the largest non-profit in the Fraser-East.


The Job:


We currently operate 2 Emergency Shelters and a third Temporary Winter Shelter open from November to on or about the end of March.

All locations operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing shelter for the more vulnerable members of adult society, who struggle not only with housing issues, but also often, addiction and/or mental health challenges.

It is the primary responsibility of the Emergency Support Worker to ensure that the shelter is clean and organized so that the guests have a safe and warm place to sleep.

The position provides coverage in our Emergency Shelters, 4pm-12am, 5 evenings a week. The position reports to an Emergency Shelter Coordinator and works at one of the three Emergency Shelters in operation. A member of the BCGEU, the wage for the position is $22.79 (JJEP Wage Grid 6).


Job Requirements:


  • Proven experience working with individuals who are impacted by a variety of complex social issues and the ability / awareness of using Trauma Informed practices when interacting with our guests
  • Comfortable with managing guest medication distribution as required
  • Experience in cleaning and/or checking beds and bedrooms on a scheduled and as needed basis
  • Providing guests with assistance on an as needed or as requested basis working within the established protocols and policies of the Agency
  • Implementing the Laundry schedule established within the Shelter
  • Cleaning guest and common rooms as scheduled
  • Stocking / restocking supplies throughout the Shelter, including providing supplies to the guests as mandated
  • Picking up and/or delivering food as scheduled and managing leftover food in a safe and sanitary fashion
  • Working independently without losing the sense of being part of a bigger team
  • Possesses a 'get it done' mentality combined with strong common sense, sound morals and ethics and the ability to remain productive throughout the Shift
  • Graduated Grade 12 desirable
  • 6 months experience working within the Social Service Sector or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Able to use deescalation skills and possess strong interpersonal skills
  • Able to establish and maintain appropriate professional and personal boundaries
  • Effective communicator both verbally and in writing; efficient time, organizational and stressmanagement skills
  • Understands the importance of working as a member of a team and being supportive of decisions from other shifts and colleagues
  • Able to make critical, sound judgements when working with vulnerable people
  • Confident ability to respond ethically and respectfully to people and communities from any and all socioeconomic, ethnic, religious, sexualorientation, age, physical and/or mental background
  • Must be able to successfully obtain a criminal record (prehire)
