One of our clients, a rapidly growing mid-size law firm with a focus on personal injury law, is currently looking for a full-time Controller.
The Controller will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the firm's financial management and performing a variety of administrative and accounting duties to maintain accurate financial records and reports.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Manage all general accounting functions, including chart of accounts and general ledger, accounts payable, payroll, fixed assets, petty cash, trust and general bank reconciliations and authorized bank account transactions.
- Monitor, analyze and report on monthly operating results, including the preparation of financial statements with variance analysis.
- Generate and analyze monthly WIP and billings reports for all lawyers.
- Prepare and file quarterly GST returns.
- Compile and process semimonthly payroll for all employees while ensuring compliance with monthly remittance requirements.
- Prepare and file annual T4 summary and information slips with Canada Revenue Agency.
- Prepare and file the annual trust report to ensure compliance with the Law Society of Alberta.
- Annual budget preparation and monitoring.
- Maintain and improve accounting practices, processes, systems and internal controls to ensure that reported results comply with reporting standards.
- Coordinate the preparation of additional financial reports and special analyses as required.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting (CPA designation would be a plus)
- 2+ years of relevant experience as Controller, ideally at a professional services firm
- 5+ years of bookkeeping experience
- Strong financial analysis skills
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
- Experience with Esi Law software
- Outstanding critical thinking skills
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
