Position Purpose


Reporting to the Chef & Manager of Ottawa Mission (OM) Kitchen Services the Kitchen Assistant is responsible for keeping the dish room, kitchen and equipment clean and organized.

He/she washes and cleans tableware, pots, pans and cooking equipment both manually and using the automated dishwasher and ensures there is adequate plates, utensils and trays available for clients through-out the meal services.

The Kitchen Assistant is responsible for garbage disposal and keeping basement storerooms neat and tidy. He/she provides support in the preparation, cooking and serving of food and beverages plus related catering duties as necessary. He/she must adhere to sanitation practices and health and safety requirements. Assumes the role and responsibilities of the Shipper/Receiver in his/her absence.


Major Responsibilities

  • Load, run and unload the dish washer, storing
  • Manually scrub and scour pots and pans and other items when necessary
  • Keep the dishwasher clean, including removing internal parts for cleaning as needed and weekly descaling
  • Report any functional or mechanical problems immediately
  • Restock dish room chemicals and ensure all containers are labeled accurately as per WHIMIS guidelines
  • Properly store all cleaned and sanitized tableware, kitchenware and equipment
  • Maintain adequate levels of clean tableware for dining room and kitchen
  • Sweep and mop fridge daily
  • Sweep and mop kitchen and elevator areas as needed
  • Clean and sanitize all kitchen appliances and equipment (i.e., fridges, stoves, grills, etc.)
  • Ensure the food preparation and production areas are clean and hygienic
  • Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of basement storeroom, cold room, fridges and freezers
  • Collect and dispose of garbage and recycling materials to compactor
  • Responsible for clearing up any broken dishes
  • Wash rags daily
  • Prepare daily coffee carts and water jugs for catering and coffee breaks
  • Retrieve supplies from basement to kitchen as required by cooks
  • Receive and unpack food services and other deliveries
  • Assist in maintaining basement storeroom, coldroom, fridges and freezers
  • Assist in maintaining inventory of kitchen paper supplies, ordering as necessary
  • Retrieving supplies from basement to kitchen for cooks
  • Assist with food preparation as required
  • Assume role and responsibilities of Shipper/Receiver in his/her absence
  • Adhere to all health and safety requirements in all daily activities.
  • Other duties as required or assigned by management

Other Requirements

Education

  • Som High School

Experience

  • Experience in kitchen environment or commercial dishwashing preferred

Qualifications

  • HACCP, WHMIS and City of Ottawa Food Handlers Certification essential
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to treat clients, staff and volunteers with courtesy and respect
  • Ability for follow instructions
  • Excellent communications skills, oral and written

Working conditions

  • High degree of physical activity involving: walking, standing, sitting, climbing stairs, bending, lifting, driving
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to work in hot, wet, humid and loud environment for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to work flexible hours and schedule, weekends and holidays may be required, as well as mornings and evening
  • Overtime as required
  • Must be comfortable working in a challenging environment that has the potential for confrontation and/or exposure to violence
