We are looking for a Technical Officer, Applied Microbiology to support our Energy, Mining and Environment Research Centre (EME). The Technical Officer, Applied Microbiology would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.


The main responsibilities of the Technical Officer, Applied Microbiology include bioactivity tests, setup, day-to-day operation and maintenance of anaerobic reactors, and processing, analysis and reporting of related experimental results.

In addition, he/she will discuss methods and procedures with colleagues and technical personnel in client organization. He/She will review literature for techniques related to the work to be performed. He/She will modify and adapt test procedures and methodology as required to correct identified problems and/or improve results.

He/She will ensure the performance and operating reliability of the equipment. More specifically, he/she will setup and operate equipment in accordance with analytical/experimental procedures and tests to be performed.


Screening Criteria:


Education:

Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Bio-engineering, Environmental sciences or Chemical engineering.

A College Diploma in a related field may also be considered.

Experience:


  • Significant experience in a microbiology or bioengineering research laboratory, particularly in the field of anaerobic fermentation, bioconversion, biofiltration or gas biotreatment;
  • Significant experience with pure, enriched and mixed cultures of microorganisms;
  • Significant experience with complex laboratory testing procedures (activity tests, biological methane potential tests, biomolecular techniques), instruments, and equipment; and
  • Basic experience with labscale bioreactors' operation and monitoring.

  • Must be able to work in a standard laboratory environment with some exposure to hazardous materials and situations

  • Working knowledge of analytical techniques required for bioreactor monitoring (gas chromatography, COD measurements, solids, pH, alkalinity, sugars, etc);
  • Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations (rule of three, volume calculations, mass balances, etc);
  • Ability to interpret results, identify problems and troubleshoot basic equipment as needed; and
  • Ability to create and maintain a safe and healthy environment based on knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety regulations and legislation.

Relocation:

Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with the NRC's directives.


Compensation:

From $58,445 to $80,040 per annum.
