Position Summary


As a key member of the financial services function, the Financial Business Manager, Clinical Programs, is responsible for the effective financial planning, performance measurement, and analysis of activities, revenues, and costs, as well as the management of financial systems for the portfolio.

The role works closely with senior management, unit managers, and directors reviewing, strategizing and making recommendations on Unit/Program financials; preparing and analyzing monthly/quarterly packages to facilitate decision making and financial/activity reporting; as well as developing, implementing and managing long and short-term strategies for the expansion of the Programs that are in alignment with hospital goals.

The Financial Business Manager is also expected to participate in and supervise others in projects/special projects relating to both the portfolio and UHN.


Duties

  • Perform and lead full cycle financial management responsibilities of Clinical Program(s) to ensure corporate deliverables are met with expected quality
  • Review and presents monthly/quarterly packages for management to facilitate the decisionmaking and financial reporting process.
  • Develop the program's annual operating budget; Assists to develop and operationalize financial strategies for the Program in conjunction with the leadership team to streamline financial operations and reporting, improve programs/services and reduce costs.
  • Lead financial forecast/planning; collaborating with the management team and medical directors to address financial issues, risks, and opportunities, providing analysis, evaluation and recommendations. Analyzes and interprets trend and budget variances, utilizing the information to appraise the financial status of the program in terms of performance against budget and other matters bearing on the operational effectiveness of the program; making recommendations for appropriate course(s) of action
  • Develop case costing, business cases, briefing notes, report; conduct complex cost/benefit analysis to determine viability of projects
  • Manage departmental projects at multiple sites/hospitals, ensuring their successful planning, implementation and ongoing operation; Conducts cost/benefit analysis to determine viability of projects
  • Manage and coach the program finance team; Establishes and monitors performance expectations; takes appropriate action when expectations are not net and/or exceeded
  • Performs other responsibilities to support the finance director and client groups.

Qualifications

  • Professional accounting designation (CPA) or business degree with relevant experience
  • Master's degree in Business or Health Administration or recognized equivalent, preferred
  • Minimum five years related experience required; experience working in a hospital is an asset
  • Strong business acumen with solid experience in business management, financial planning, performance measurement and budgeting functions
  • Ability and proven experience to communicate (written and verbal) effectively with senior management
  • Demonstrates attention to detail, with strong motivational and leadership skills
  • Demonstrates a commitment to providing a high level of customer service, with an acute understanding of stakeholders and their needs (high emotional intelligence); utilizes sound judgment and decision making
  • Demonstrated project management skills; ability to organize, control and coordinate a variety of activities in a fastpaced, everchanging environment
  • Outstanding organizational and time managements skills including ability to prioritize workload, manage unexpected occurrences and manage deadlines
  • Working knowledge of Health System Funding Reform is an asset
