Position Summary:

The Learning Facilitator is responsible for establishing networks of support to facilitate the success of Aboriginal learners.

The networks of support include involving learners, their parents, and Elders wherever possible to provide students with a sense of purpose, place and identity.

The Learning Facilitator role is to enhance, plan and provide direct student support services.


Duties:


  • Coordinate/participate in Committee Network Planning with Elders, Vancouver Community College/Capilano University/Native Education College (VCC/Cap/NEC) Aboriginal Coordinators, parents, and student leaders;
  • Planning projects such as extracurricular activities, social inclusion learning projects that support student's sense of place;
  • Make recommendations on Counseling Training for Learning Facilitators to enable Learning Facilitators to provide early intervention and referrals that would support the learner;
  • Research and provide information on learning and career path planning, including occupational descriptions and regional labor market trends;
  • Inform Committee Elders about Aboriginal learner career plans to enhance supports;
  • Engage and recognize Aboriginal learner's parents/caregivers contribution to learner success;
  • Network with schools and communities thorough visits and presentations;
  • Establish Learner Recognition/Role Model motivation program for students that would inform/create awareness of learning path/career path planning;
  • Work with VCC/Cap/NEC Aboriginal Coordinators to develop core Learning Facilitator resources information and materials and make recommendations on how to provide increased Aboriginal student support;
  • Develop Handbooks for Learners and Parents;
  • Liaise with Institutional faculty and staff to increase awareness of Committee services, share pedagogy research, and enhance teacher relations with Aboriginal learners;
  • Make recommendations on the new Accountability Framework and statistical information which measure the progress made towards meeting the goals and objectives of the ASP;
  • Make recommendations on opportunities to leverage community supports (prevention/intervention/support) and funding partnership to the Education Manager, including needs/gaps for transportation costs
  • Tutor and support students enrolled in the MIB Adult Basic Education program

Job Knowledge:


  • Education : typically received through completion of a degree in Education or equivalent or equivalent combination of education, skill, knowledge, and experience to be able to tutor and support students in math, science, social studies and English.
  • Strong attention to detail and strong administrative and organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Flexible work hours
  • Strong Computer Skills
  • First Nations ancestry is an asset

Working Conditions:


  • Work is performed in an office environment and occasionally in the community
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Successful Criminal Record Check
