Position Summary


This position encompasses assessment of allegations of abuse and neglect and other child protection referrals as outlined in the Child, Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA 2017), as well as support for ongoing child protection services cases.

This position requires the individual to work from a trauma and equity focused lens when working with all children, youth, and families, many from marginalized, racialized, and oppressed communities.

The nature of this position requires flexible working hours.


Principal Responsibilities

  • Child Protection
  • Support the implementation of objectives to ensure the agency's responsiveness and accountability to the diverse communities of Huron and Perth with a particular focus on Indigenous, Black and LGBTQ2S+ communities.
  • Screen calls, determine response, provide information, consultation, assessment, and crisis intervention to sources of referral such as other professionals and liaises closely with other services providers in the community to ensure optimum delivery of service.
  • Develop comprehensive family assessments and case plans together with families.
  • Complete risk and safety assessments of children within their family homes.
  • Provide case work services to families where risk to children exists, aimed at family preservation.
  • Counsel individuals and families and refer to appropriate community resources and supports as required.
  • Attend Court as required.
  • Children in Care
  • Admit children to care, where required in accordance with agency Policy, Provincial Standards, Regulations and Legislation.
  • Ensure immediate safety of children through a Safety Plan that involved engagement and collaboration with family, community, and community organizations evidenced by creative thinking to overcome challenges when necessary.
  • Provide ongoing service to children in care with the aim of timely reintegration with the family.
  • Maintains a caseload in consultation with supervisory personnel.
  • Develop a plan of care in conjunction with the child, resource providers and the family.
  • Develop and maintain effective and therapeutic casework relationships with service recipients with the objective of supporting and promoting their ability to reduce risk of harm to children
  • Provide referrals to appropriate internal and external resources in order to provide quality service to service users, with the objective of reducing risk of harm to children.
  • General
  • Record all elements of investigations and assessment in compliance with Ministry and Agency standards within allotted time frames, making recommendations for ongoing services where appropriate, both within agency and to other community agencies
  • Develop and maintain effective and therapeutic casework relationships with service recipients with the objective of supporting and promoting their ability to reduce risk of harm to children

  • Consult with direct Manager or covering Manager if any contentious/high risk case during regular hours or afterhours and check in after appointment.
  • Utilize anti-oppressive, critical thinking and solution focused involvements to carry out interventions with families in the least disruptive course of action required to ensure child/youth safety.
  • Awareness and competency in identifying and addressing bias, discrimination, and racism to disrupt systemic barriers that families, children and youth are experiencing.
  • Participate on agency and community committees to further enhance service delivery and /or policy development.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of community engagement strategies that create and improve partnerships, engaging in regular outreach to diverse communities.
  • Participate in agency staff meeting, team meeting, regular supervision, and agency and professional training.
  • Completes emergency afterhours duty requirements as scheduled by supervisory personnel.
  • Undertakes other responsibilities and performs other duties as required.
  • Health and Safety
  • Familiarize self with and work in compliance with Health and Safety policies and procedures for safety and protection as required by the Agency and by Law (OHSA s28(1)(a).
  • Share responsibility for promoting safe work practices at all times.
  • Delivery of service is completed in a safe manner and exhibits good judgement and problem-solving skills.
  • Ensure management is apprised of any health and safety issues in the performance of their duties in a timely fashion.
  • Report all injuries and incidents of workplace violence and harassment.
