The Genetics & Genomics (G&G) team has an exciting opportunity for two Laboratory Scientist II - Genome Analyst positions supporting the Cytogenetic and Molecular Genetic Laboratories co-located at University of Alberta Hospital.

G&G, as part of Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL), provides complex genetic testing for a broad range of conditions, serving an important role in the provision of genetic services for the province of Alberta.

The Laboratory Scientist II - Genome Analyst works as part of a collaborative laboratory team comprised of laboratory geneticists, managers, clinical supervisors, laboratory scientists/technologists, bioinformaticians and other laboratory staff to review, analyze and interpret genetic variants.

Their role is to identify from exome or genome-wide data potential disease-causing variants in individuals with a wide range of clinical presentations and family histories.

This individual will evaluate, track and document all sources of evidence used in decision-making and prepare written summaries of their findings.

They may need to collate information from multiple genomic sources or other investigations to make conclusions regarding the underlying cause of a genetic condition.

The Genome Analyst will keep up to date with publications and databases related to genetic variation and support complex analysis within the Genetics & Genomics program.

Multiple positions available in both Edmonton and Calgary. There are 2 positions available.


Description:


As a Laboratory Scientist II, you will be responsible for participation in the initiation of new approaches to testing, researching the viability of given projects, facilitating methodology development and conducting advanced or complex patient tests.

In addition, you will be involved in the implementation of new technologies and instrumentation and develop training procedures for new or revised programs, technology or instrumentation.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of a Master of Medical Laboratory Science degree or a related scientific discipline.


Additional Required Qualifications:


Preferred Qualifications:

Formal training in Variant Interpretation, certificate or graduation from an accredited program would be an asset. Experience in a clinical genetics or molecular biology laboratory. Experience annotating and classifying human genetic and genomic variants in a clinical setting. Knowledge of the theory and practice of human cytogenetic analysis including proper use of ISCN nomenclature is an asset. CMLTA registration is an asset but not a requirement.
