We are looking for a Permanent, Part-Time Shelter Counsellor to work in our Client Services Program. This is a permanent part-time union position working 26.25 hours from Friday to Sunday from 11: PM to 7:45 AM


As a Shelter Counsellor, you will not only act on behalf of your client, but in your role, you will contribute to your team by consulting and working with staff and volunteers to facilitate the integration of all programs which clients may participate in, including child support, outreach, and other programs.

You will provide telephone support through our crisis line and ensure callers are assessed for agency programs, or provided with appropriate community resources.


  • WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
  • Provide crisis counselling (individual and/or group counselling)
  • Maintain case files daily
  • Develop safety plans
- ensure residents feel safe at all times; screen phone calls, use electronic security systems, and meet daily to get to know each client and support them through their challenges

  • Ensure daily notes are updated and that documentation is prepared for the new day.
  • WHAT YOU BRING TO OUR MISSION
  • Diploma in Human Services or B.S.W. or B.A. in Social Science (preferred).
  • A minimum of two (2) years' previous experience in any of the following areas is required: domestic violence, Children's Services, homelessness, or addictions/mental health issues.
  • Previous experience working within Scott Miller's Feedback Informed Treatment is an asset.
  • Knowledge of, or experience with, Allen Wade's Response Based Practice.
  • Discretion, tact and ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Selfmotivated with strong selfmanagement ability is essential.
  • Team work philosophy of collaboration and cooperation is required as it is necessary to coordinate the involvement of other colleagues on the team and throughout the agency.
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written) in English. A second language would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated effective and engaging interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with strengths in prioritization and efficiencies.
  • Able to multitask and adapt to various situations.
  • Keen attention to detail and strong work ethic.
  • Previous experience with administrative duties.
  • Must be comfortable with clientcentred approaches and who are familiar with the responsebased approach (Dr. Allan Wade and Dr. Linda Coates) and Feedback Informed Treatment (Dr. Scott Miller)

  • Ongoing training and development is a required condition of this position.
  • A criminal records search and an intervention record check are conditions of employment.
  • If eligible for registration with a professional body, registration must be current.
  • In accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada.
  • Effective January 1, 222 being fully vaccinated against Covid19 is condition of employment.
  • This is a unionized position.
