Your opportunity:
The Division of Teaching Labs (DTL) supports the delivery of laboratory courses and practicals by providing laboratory infrastructure, experimental needs, and technical expertise to departments within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine.
DTL focuses on providing sustainable, effective, and responsive service to the departments, and ensuring a positive, productive, and safe learning and work environment.
We advance youth STEM initiatives through collaborative and in-house outreach and educational programming.
As a Lab Technician, you will be part of a dynamic team supporting the delivery of laboratory courses and practicals.
This is an opportunity to serve as a technical resource on lab techniques, experimental procedures and equipment while also promoting and conducting safe, cleanly, and organized lab practices.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing laboratory support/services by setting up lab/workshops according to research/course schedules and lab set up requirements
- Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students and/or employees on lab techniques, experimental procedures, and protocols
- Maintaining inventory of glass and dishware, workstations, chemicals and/or apparatus within the lab including troubleshooting routine equipment repairs and resolving issues with malfunctioning equipment
- Providing general lab maintenance by preparing, assembling and setting up material, equipment and supplies
- Ensuring safe handling of specialized lab equipment and materials and paying close attention to occupational safety precautions
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
- Minimum two years of experience working as a Laboratory Technician using a broad range of experimental methods
- Strong scientific background in biochemistry and molecular biology experiments and concepts
- Experience working with protein/DNA, ELISA, Gel electrophoresis, etc.
- Experience working with yeast and bacterial organism
- Experience preparing solutions required for biochemistry and/or immunology
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams)
- Must be able to operate and calibrate laboratory equipment used in teaching labs
- Solid team player with excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills (oral and written)
- Physical ability to lift objects of up to 25kg
