Student Crisis Response Professional (2 year specific project)

Hours: 10 am to 6 pm (occasional overtime may be required)


Professional status:


This new position is based on a community safety philosophy which encourages an interactive partnership between campus Security and members of the community to facilitate a team approach to safety and security.

The Security team and the Counseling team strive to promote inclusivity, respect, dignity and well-being in partnership with students, faculty, and staff.


Reporting to the Director of Student Services and having a dotted-line relationship to the Director of Facilities Management Services (FMS), the Student Crisis Response Professional is in the unique position to act as a mobile psychosocial support, responding to emergency calls from the JAC community when and where they happen, including the classroom.

Working collaboratively with Security and Counselling teams, this person has the mental health first aid skills to intervene in highly complicated situations including but not limited to:

mental health concerns, behavioral concerns, substance abuse, issues of trauma (including sexual violence), family problems, and to act as a resource for Student Code of Conduct & civility issues.

They will also be called upon to help develop and implement training initiatives for Security, Facilities Management Services, and the wider College community on effective, responsive, and non-stigmatizing responses to students, staff and faculty experiencing difficulties.


GENERAL DUTIES:

  • Responding to and deescalating crisis situations using a wide range of interpersonal and persuasive skills
  • Provide initial clinical support and/ or supportive counseling to distressed students in crisis and making referrals to appropriate resources (on and off campus)
  • Document confidential and sensitive information regarding complex case files for distressed students
  • Work with members of the Security team and others to create, design, train and implement educational programs, seminars and / or workshops to improve their active listening and crisis response skills
  • Work with members of the faculty to help in dealing with the multitude of classroom events which occur on a daily basis
  • Participates in the development and followup of strategic objectives, annual priorities, and departmental work plans in FMS & Student Services
  • Prepares written reports and promotes interdisciplinary projects with various sectors of the college on student issues
  • Performs other related tasks as may be assigned.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Work with Security and other FMS team members to assist in the development of skills to deal with a varied array of student issues:
  • Develop workshops for Security staff (such as, active listening, mental health first aid, suicide prevention, sexual violence prevention, etc.)
  • Act as a Facilitator
  • May be asked to participate in selection of new Security staff
  • Work with Faculty members to develop skill sets required to deal with a variety of student issues:
  • Create & lead new workshops and initiatives for Faculty
  • Assist in developing skills to deal with inclusivity, equity and inclusion in the classroom
  • Act as a Resource person
  • Work with Counseling team:
  • Help lead new programming initiatives for students
  • Participate in the Counseling team meetings and debrief sessions
  • Collaborate with the Sexual Assault Resource Team on sexual violence prevention, as needed.
  • Act as a Liaison with Security and other sectors of the college
  • Collaborate with the Security Manager in the creation and launch of invention procedures.
  • Participate in collaboration with the security team in the post mortem meetings.
  • Collaborate with all parties involved in the design and implementation of a collegewide mental health crisis response and postvention plan, and other various initiatives to align with the National Standard for Post-Secondary Mental Health & Well-Being
