    This position is the primary point of contact for payroll, benefits administration, entitlement-related processes, inquiries or issues for managers and employees for ISC and its subsidiaries. In addition to processing payments and managing employee benefits and entitlements, the Payroll & Benefits Specialist is responsible for the payroll audit function that includes validating the accuracy of time and attendance entries, responding to and resolving customer inquiries, problems, issues and complaints. Reporting to Payroll & Benefits Manager, other highlights include:

  • Responsible to manage all aspects of timely and accurate delivery of payroll and benefits administration on a biweekly and/or monthly basis within strict timelines and non-negotiable deadlines including managing a variety of pay items, ad-hoc payments (e.g. Severance, final payments on termination, RRSP transfer requests), retroactive adjustments and other unique or unusual compensation-based demands.
  • Responsible to manage and maintain accurate entitlement and attendance records to ensure accurate corporate liability balances and benefit administration managed through Workday.
  • This position will ensure pre and post audit review of data for each payroll cycle are completed in a timely manner to ensure the integrity, completeness and accuracy of data is managed and maintained.
  • Actively involved with the HR Business Partners and HR team in providing support in attendance management, performance based and disability related issues and is responsible to provide accurate reporting for confidential or sensitive cases.
  • Required to support the annual yearend performance management cycle by accurately processing performance-based payments, including bonus pay and in-range adjustments as well as other mass salary changes as required.
  • Provides support in the Labour Relations environment by managing annual economic adjustments that impact pay and for providing research or information for ongoing problems, issues or anomalies within the unionized environment.
  • Provide accurate and timely General Ledger interfaces for the Corporation's financial system and manage the yearend and new-year processes required by Revenue Canada (i.e., T4 and other related adjustments) and support the Payroll and Benefits Manager for ensuring processes are compliant and meet key controls.
  • A high level of integrity and confidentiality is required to manage sensitive pay related information or compensation discussions and planning leading up to finalized decisions. This position is responsible to manage personal and private employee data as it relates to benefit coverage and may be required to provide input on attendance or disability cases. This position will provide backup to the Payroll & Benefits Manager, and the Human Resources Analyst.
  • Working closely with the Payroll and Benefits Manager, this position will also provide support with pension and benefit plan administration and is responsible for the following:

  • Ensure effective processes are in place for pension and benefit administration within the HR team and with the interactions with the company's benefit and insurance carriers as well and maintaining accurate data within third party insurance modules/databases (Canada Life, Manulife, PEPP databases as an example).
  • Responsible to ensure that benefit premiums and accurately configured in Workday and the pension and benefit remittances and payments to the insurance carriers are applied in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Address benefit-related issues and work with the Payroll and Benefits Manager and with the HRIS Manager to find solutions or identify areas of improvement or efficiencies.
  • Responsible to manage the ISC Flexible Spending Account Plan (FSA) including determining new plan year eligibility, calculation of benefit, disbursement of payment to third party institutes and managing employee benefit accounts throughout the plan year and ensure that the integrity, completeness, and accuracy of data is managed and maintained.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of insurance programs and employee leave programs that continue to meet the needs of a diverse workforce in a cost-effective manner.
  • What you'll need:

  • A certification with the National Payroll Institute or a Human Resources diploma/certificate or equivalent experience in Payroll administration.
  • A minimum of 5 to 7 years of practical experience in payroll and benefits administration. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Knowledge of provincial and federal payroll legislation, Employment Standards, and the ability to effectively interpret a collective agreement and operate in a unionized environment.
  • Knowledge and ability to manage legislated yearend processes.
  • This client-facing role requires excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interpersonal skills with the ability to problem solve and resolve issues on a daily basis.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of data accuracy and manage information with a high degree of integrity, sensitivity and confidentiality.
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills and ability to multitask, prioritize work and function under pressure in a fast-paced environment while working towards strict deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office tools and familiarity with Workday or other outsourced payroll system(s).
