Position Summary:

This school-based Cultural Advisor will support Indigenous students with social-emotional needs, building relationships and strengthening resilience.

This position provides support to students during the school day, including lunch and after school programming, workshops and creating cultural experiences.

In addition, the Cultural Advisor will guide and advise our whole school community, providing foundational knowledge about Indigenous cultural beliefs, values, customs, practices, healing ways, ceremonies, traditional medicines and protocols.

Indigenous students will learn from this advisor's knowledge and lived experience which will help students develop confidence and self-awareness in their own unique identities and culture.

The Cultural Advisor also acts as a link between home, school and community to help families access the supports they need.


Job Duties/Responsibilities:

- working with students and teaching staff to ensure Indigenous students reach their full educational potential
- working with staff and school community to build cultural and foundational knowledge
- forming positive relationships with students and coaching them on self-advocacy and conflict management skills
- supporting students to develop self-confidence and self-worth and coaching them on facing challenges and uncertainties
- working collaboratively with all school staff to support students in their academic learning, personal well being, honoring everyone's rights and living up to their responsibilities
- connecting school community with Elders, Knowledge Keepers and local community members
- advising on Indigenous cultural beliefs, values, customs, practices, healing ways, ceremonies, traditional medicines and protocols for the benefit of all students
- planning school presentations and resources for culturally-significant dates
- supporting school-home partnerships with parents and caregivers
- connecting families to community agencies, programs, and supports, including helping with socio-economic and nutritional needs


Education/Qualifications:

- high school diploma plus a two-year post-secondary program of studies
- three years of related experience including experience working with at-risk youth
- broad understanding of First Nations, Métis and Inuit cultures
- experience partnering with post-secondary institutions


Rate of Pay:

$2, $3,013.50 bi-weekly
