Reporting to the Program Manager, the Mental Health Court Support Worker is responsible for assisting individuals with mental health or addictions concerns who are involved with the Criminal Justice System


Duties include:
Ø Participate in the planning, implementation and evaluation of programs and services including making recommendations on changes to current program activities

Ø Receive and process referrals from the accused individual, as well as from families, friends, police, defense counsel, crown attorney, community agencies working with the individual

Ø Gather information to complete a psychosocial assessment, including medical and relevant criminal background and the current and existing support services network

Ø Meet with the individual at the court to assess their suitability for the Diversion Program including assessment of their mental health status, their current living situation, and other psychosocial issues

Ø Provide support and information to the accused and their family

Ø Develop an individualized service plan when the individual consents to participation in the Diversion Program

Ø Present recommendations for a Diversion plan to the Provincial Crown Attorney, and occasionally the Federal Crown, for approval

Ø Provide case management and counseling to individuals that have been approved for a Mental Health Diversion and report to the court as required

Ø Prepare all court and agency reporting as required

Ø Collect required data for input and reporting to the Ministry of Health

Ø Provide consultation to the Provincial and Federal Crown Attorney regarding individuals presenting with mental disorders who are either too high a risk for violence or the charges are too serious to support a Diversion plan

Hours of work are 37.50 per week, some evening work may be required. The normal workday is 8 hours, including a 30-minute unpaid lunch break.

What you will bring
Ø Bachelor's degree in a relevant program

Ø Maintain registration with a professional college (i.e. College of Social Workers, College of Registered Psychotherapists)

Ø Cross trained in mental health and addictions

Ø Clinical experience working with individuals with mental health disorders

Ø Competent screening and assessment skills

Ø Knowledge of Psycho-social Rehabilitation

Ø Knowledge of pharmaceuticals used in the treatment of mental disorders

Ø Ability to advocate and coordinate service access

Ø Current knowledge of adult mental health services, community services and the justice system in Grey Bruce

Ø Good understanding of relevant provincial and local legislation and government policies, procedures and practices pertaining to services provided by CMHA

Ø Excellent communication, interpersonal and networking skills

Ø Effective decision making and crisis intervention skills

Ø Ability to work independently and as a member of an inter-disciplinary team

Ø A valid Canadian driver's license and the use of a reliable personal vehicle

Ø Minimum $2,000,000 third party liability vehicle insurance

Ø A satisfactory police record check including vulnerable sector screening
