  • Under the general direction of the Quality Analyst, Asset Stewardship and Safety, the Trainer, Transit Fleet, manages the training program for new Transit Fleet employees and continuous training for more than 130 fleet staff. In addition, the Trainer assumes responsibility for overall departmental training plans and plays an active role on the Transit leadership team.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Designs, develops, implements and evaluates, in consultation with Business Analysts and Supervisors and Superintendents, the delivery of specialized training and continuous training programs to meet the changing needs of Halifax Transit Fleet;
  • Develops training and development programs and associated training materials for Apprentice Mechanics, Licensed Mechanics, Hostler Repairpersons and Hostlers, as well as other Fleet staff in the Transit Fleet division;
  • Conducts classroom and on floor training for Transit Fleet employees;
  • Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of the Transit Fleet Training program through quality audits;
  • Develops testing criteria for Fleet staff to evaluate skill sets;
  • Ensures training and processes meet provincial and Federal guidelines as per the Motor Carrier Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (CMVSS);
  • Assists with the implementation of all components of the Transit Fleet recruitment program including screening, testing, interviewing and selection;
  • Develops and implements appropriate programs to monitor and evaluate progress of new employees during training; provides and follows up on recommendations for improvement;
  • Develops programs to monitor and evaluate probationary employees in safe work practices and quality of work;
  • Makes performance management recommendations for personnel;
  • Conducts coaching sessions with Transit Fleet staff, as required;
  • Trains and audits performance of contract personnel, as required;
  • Ensures employee training records and the training library are maintained;
  • Develops policies and procedures as it applies to new equipment and/or activities so that training and safety requirements are met;
  • Liaises with Quality/Business Analysts and Transit Fleet Supervisory groups to ensure scheduling delivers fully qualified employees that can meet service objectives;
  • Responsible for the change management associated with new training as well as updates to existing processes and standards;
  • Collaborate with other instructor(s) to ensure a cohesive and effective learning environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience:


  • Successful completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Certificate or diploma in adult education; Experience in teaching or facilitating adult learners in a truck and transport environment.
  • Three (3) years of experience as a Certified Truck and Transport or Automotive Mechanic in the province of NS or equivalent.
  • Valid Driver's License with a good driving record.
  • Supervisory experience in the fleet industry is considered an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:


  • Knowledge of Transit buses considered an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience of/with Electric and/or Hybrid Electric Vehicles considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of reading technical prints and documentation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and motivational abilities.
  • Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment appropriate for instructing adult learners.
  • Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with adult learners from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to create lesson plans and design curriculum that meets the needs of adult learners.
  • Experience using Fleet Focus or other maintenance management system.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Outlook including Word and Excel

WORK STATUS: Permanent, Full-time

HOURS OF WORK: Monday to Friday, 8:00am - 4:00pm for 35 hours per week. Work outside these hours is routinely required due to employee shift work.

SALARY: Non-Union, Level 5 $61,360 - $84,370 per annum
