We work together with Nova Scotians with disabilities, community and disability organizations, businesses, municipalities, post-secondary institutions and other partners to support the cultural shift needed to implement the Accessibility Act and address disability-related issues across government.


About Our Opportunity:


As the Manager, Accessibility Directorate, you will lead a team of professional staff, and provide leadership and direction for the development and delivery of awareness, education, capacity building and collaborative initiatives across sectors throughout the province.

You will lead the development of awareness and education plans and initiatives to support the effective implementation of accessibility standards as they are enacted, work collaboratively to build capacity in accessibility across sectors, and establish partnerships for accessibility research and programs.

You will develop and approve advice, briefing materials, analysis and make recommendations to senior leadership on government programs, policies, procedures, legislation and regulations which may have a direct effect or impact on persons with disabilities in Nova Scotia.


In this role, you will report to the Director of Programs and Services and will collaborate and consult with other Accessibility Directorate staff, Nova Scotians with disabilities, provincial government departments, other levels of government, researchers, other experts, impacted sectors including private and non-profit sectors, professional associations, and organizations that represent persons with disabilities to advance accessibility in Nova Scotia.


You will be responsible to:

  • Develop and/or deliver awareness, education, capacity building and collaboration plans and strategies by managing a team of professionals. Mentor, coach and monitor team to ensure priorities and objectives are met, and aligned with the Department and Government strategy.
  • Collaborate and strengthen opportunities to promote accessibility and increase awareness, education, and build capacity across sectors throughout the province.
  • Maintain effective and collaborative relationships with municipal, provincial and federal governments, public sector bodies, disability organizations, the private and nonprofit sector, and other partners.
  • Provide leadership by utilizing a broad knowledge of programs, policies, and legislation to establish collaborative relationships with a variety of stakeholders, ensuring mechanisms are in place to monitor and report operational issues.
  • Manage the development and/or operation of aspects of internal/external communications with some guidance from senior leadership.
  • Mitigate risks by providing interpretation of policies, legislation, new initiatives and revisions to the managers, employees, clients, internal and external stakeholders.
  • Plan and implement quality frameworks to ensure standards are met and measured as benchmarks, and facilitate continuous improvement to current processes, systems and procedures.
  • Lead work and provide feedback on complex issues, work in collaboration with partners for a resolution and represent Department on committees with stakeholders.
  • Develop and/or deliver budget plans with some guidance from senior leadership. Deliver prescribed outcomes for area of financial control by working within established systems.
  • Ensure effective management of human and financial resources by setting and evaluating staff performance targets, promoting diversity and a healthy workplace, demonstrating leadership competencies, respecting corporate human resource practices, promoting teamwork and individual development, maintaining internal communications, monitoring expenditures while adhering to procurement guidelines.

Qualifications and Experience:


You are a creative and forward-thinking leader with strong relationships across sectors to enable you to provide leadership for accessibility awareness, capacity building and collaborative initiatives.

You identify patterns and trends, bring facts and ideas together, and develop innovative approaches to improve accessibility awareness, capacity building, and collaboration across sectors in Nova Scotia.

You have a university degree in a related field of study as well as several years of progressive related experience.

A demonstrated acceptable equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered.
