There is one Part-Time contract Cook position available starting on May 06, 2024, and ending on July 15, 2024. working 22.5 hours per week.

Your Role:


Under the direction of the Manager of Food Services, assumes responsibility for meeting the dietary and food service requirements of residents with differing needs and preferences.

Provides guidance and training to food services staff in all dietary and food preparation procedures. Contributes ideas toward the creation of menu that caters to a diverse resident group. Communicates and answers questions from residents and guests related to the menu. Maintains the confidentiality of information relating to residents and their families. Works intentionally from an anti-racist, anti-oppressive perspective to further create a sense of belonging at the Village.


Tasks:


Cooking:

  • Prepares and offers meals that are well balanced, attractive, and comply with Canada's Food Guide; Ensures that meals and snacks are presented to maximize visual appeal, taste, and texture.
  • Undertakes basic cooking duties, such as reducing sauces and parboiling food; Prepares dishes such as salads and entrees.
  • Prepares quantities of food that align with budget and reduce waste.
  • Prepares specialized meals based on resident preferences, dietary restrictions, and cultural cuisines.
  • Ensures that specified meals being prepared for residents with allergies or intolerances are kept away from foods and surfaces that might contain those ingredients.
  • Prepare Village Shoppe and Martin's Restaurant menu items as required to support daily sales and special events.

Prepping:

  • Assists with peeling, dicing, and washing food products.
  • Set up workstations and ingredients so that food can be prepared according to recipes.
  • Communicates effectively with the team to determine produce orders.
  • Assists with dishwasher duties when required.

Safe Food Handling:

  • Ensures that meals are served at proper temperatures and as scheduled.
  • Inspects work areas, supplies, ingredients, and cooking equipment to ensure constant conformance to regulatory standards.
  • Ensures food is safely stored and properly labeled and dated to avoid spoilage and facilitate proper rotation.
  • Participates in proper cleaning of the kitchen and serving areas including but not limited to server equipment, countertops, kitchen equipment, cooking surfaces, floor, fridges, and freezers.
  • Works within legislated requirements for proper food handling and infection, prevention and control including WHMIS, Occupational Health and Safety, RHRA and Public Health.
  • Organizes fridge and dry storage in accordance with food safety regulations; Rotates inventory in the fridge (newest to the back). First in first out (FIFO).

Administration:

  • Works with the Manager, Food Services to monitor food and supplies inventory and ensure supplies are maintained. Shops for food items when required.
  • Informs the food service leaders of appliance and other equipment breakdown.
  • Assists with distributing the weekly orders to the right storage areas, as well as checking product that is delivered against what was ordered.
  • Receives food and supplies and checks delivery prior to signing. Reports discrepancies to the Manager, Food Services.
  • Assists with lastminute scheduling adjustments (i.e., sick calls), as required.
  • Assist the Manager, Food Services in the planning of diverse menus.
  • Completes monthly food inventory as required.
  • Records temperatures for fridges, freezers, and food in compliance with safe food handling.

Your Talents and Experience:

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent with a valid safe food handling certificate required. Red Seal an asset or two-years of formal food preparation training preferred. Must be able to communicate clearly with residents and staff. Must be able to perform mathematical calculations for ordering food and calculating portions. Has had previous experience developing menus for the senior population. Has a solid understanding of how to use and maintain kitchen equipment.

Must demonstrate empathy for and understanding of the needs of seniors, their families and the professionals engaged in their care.
