    Position Overview

    Under the direction of the O.R. Manager or Manager Health Services, the incumbent is responsible for: promotion and compliance with the VH mission, objectives, goals, policies and procedures for perioperative nursing; providing a continuity of care throughout the perioperative period, using scientific and behavioural practices with the eventual goal of meeting the individual needs of the patient undergoing surgical intervention. (Expected practice behaviours include assessment, planning, implementation of perioperative nursing interventions and evaluation.

    Experience

  • Current perioperative nursing experience required.
  • Preference will be given to those with demonstrated current perioperative nursing experience.
  • Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Graduate of an approved Registered Nursing education program required.
  • Post-graduate perioperative nursing course preferred.
  • CNA Perioperative Nursing Certification preferred.
  • Successful completion of the AORN Periop 101 online course or equivalent Operating Room training/experience is preferred.
  • Applicants without previous operating room training/experience must successfully complete the AORN Periop 101 online course* within three months of the date of employment. Extensions to complete the course may be granted up to six months in special circumstances.
  • *The WRHA Surgery Program offers basic orientation through the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Periop 101 Didactic course to successful applicants with no previous perioperative experience. This is an online, evidence-based, accredited course for new operating room nurses to learn the basic, core principles of practice. The successful candidate may be required to purchase the required textbook and reading material for this orientation course. Successful completion of the course within three months of their start date (prior to the end of their probationary or trial period) is a requirement.

    Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Responsible for maintaining and providing proof of registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM).
  • Active participation in professional associations e.g. Association of Regulated Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM) preferred.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Training requirements for this position shall be in accordance with the Employer policy.
  • Qualifications and Skills

  • Knowledge of: College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses. Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses. Scope of practice as documented in the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA)/Registered Psychiatric Nurses Act. Regional/Facility/Unit policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines. Nursing care knowledge related to clinical area. Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), Protection of Persons in Care Act, Mental Health Act, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Principles of Routine Practices (Universal Precautions) and other legislated acts. Roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team. Principles of delegation.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Indigenous language and/or knowledge in Indigenous customs, traditions and values.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking/problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize care for an individual patient or group of patients.
  • Ability to respond to a variety of simultaneous demands.

  • Physical Requirements

  • Moderate to heavy physical effort required.
  • This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
